324661 2005-02-13 11:11:00 Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has any information on the new SkyTV PVR decoders that they're apparently releasing this year. Skys website currently says:

When will the new recording set-top boxes be available, and how much will they be?
We are hoping to have the decoders available in approximately 12 months, however we have no confirmed dates, functions or pricing details available as yet

Another thread on these forums mentions something along the lines

Interestingly enough, there was a review of the new Sky TV PVR decoder which will be an option next year... looks VERY nice with a whole bunch of outputs for all the home cinema fanatics out there along with (wait for it) a 10/100 network connection...

I'm wondering whats the deal? Any info on Brand/Model, input and output options, HD size. I wonder if they'll get some cheap brand like the current batch of satellite decoders they're using (made in Mexico)........

EDIT

SKY Chief Executive John Fellet said the device would add US$135 to US$169 to the cost of a typical SKY installation.

324662 2005-02-13 12:40:00 Aargh... there's a good review in Tone I think? The issue is either the current one or the previous one.

I'll have a look around for it to see if I can get some details of it. I remember thinking it was a pretty awesome PVR system!

It was the December 2004 Tone. I read the article just in time to stop myself buying a HDD DVD recorder (for about $1800). The Sky PVR (according to the article) will have a 160Gb HDD (no DVD, though an external one could be connected), and best of all, twin tuners. Finally, you will be able to record one Sky channel and watch another, or even record two Sky channels. Rumours I heard on pricing suggested NZ$200 - NZ$250 on an installation. Well worth waiting for, in my opinion. Also, the Sky PVR will be integrated with the Sky EPG (Electronic Program Guide) for easier recording.

Cheers Guys, thats really handy to know ;).
My partner has been wanting to change our bedroom second decoder (uhf) to another Digital one (now the price has come down for that), while i was wanting to go for the HDD dvd recorder myself ;). So may be worth holding off a wee bit longer on that then :), could save ourselves some big dollars!

Cheers

324667 2005-02-17 20:32:00 Thanks to Lohsing, I have a scan of the article from Tone

Sorry Guys, but you cannot just scan an article and stick it on a website. This is copyright material (Parkside Media) and no publisher, ourselves included, looks kindly on such practices. - Bruce Buckman

- worth a read but this will be what we want to see (finally digital sound):

www.taieriprint.co.nz

No brand to mention - must be european/asian thanks to scart connectors.
There doesn't look like a network port - only a phone jack. Although the USB port could be good if you can plug in something else (Harddrive) to it.

324668 2005-02-18 13:32:00 From the looks of the box's they look very similar to the UK Sky+ PVR's... nice and functional, can record series links, pause, rewind etc etc. Have to "upgrade" and wait for the new card which is then married to the box before you could record TV.

You do need to have 2 x LNB's, but can get away with one input but just cant watch one channel and record another.

Now thinking about bringing my UK box back to NZ with me...

324669 2005-03-19 21:41:00 I was speaking to a Sky Telebranch person on the phone today and asked for an update to when the Sky PVR decoder will be released.

Their answer, after a long delay and consulting with their supervisor was "towards the end of the year". (This year being 2005 ;-)

No DVD? So if you tape something it just goes onto the HDD, then can you move it onto a DVD? You'd still need a DVD Recorder then wouldn't you?
And this new thing won't play DVDs either?
