324207 2005-02-12 01:22:00 Fresh off Slashdot, an op-ed about the impending death of Microsoft. (abcnews.go.com). The opinion is based on the writers "gut-feeling" and "sense-of-smell", so I wouldn't put a whole lot of credence in it, except that it brings up an intriguing question: Who will replace Microsoft, if and when it dies?

Mac? Mac currently has the problem of being both software and hardware closed. However, it has a beautiful, friendly OS and a great line in personal electronics that will continue to expand. As it integrates them, it will create a Microsoft effect of integration that will be antagonistic to anything else, including open-source. Mac may never have the reach of Microsoft of the present and past, but it will tie people in with both software and hardware to a much greater degree. Merging with the likes of IBM will make it even more powerful.

Open-source? Linux will continue to thrive and improve with user-friendly distros like Xandros, but will never match Mac. It will always be, or at least always perceived to be, the province of those who are technically competent, especially in the case of the BSDs.

I have a feeling that Windows will continue to labour on in some outdated form, just like Windows 95 now. A large cohort of 3rd party suppliers of patches and support will spring up around it, but it will cease to be the most important OS in the computing world.

324210 2005-02-12 06:49:00 This should resolve that problem here (http://www.mslinux.org/) :p :D (is it true because I read about it on the web, I dont think so in this case)

No.

324212 2005-02-12 06:55:00 It'll happen. I don't mind, I'll just install Linux. There. It does all I need, and as opposed to Mac OS (Which is pretty, but so is Style XP!), I won't need to buy a new computer Edward (31)

Don't think it is going to happen any time soon. Could be the Cell Chip will give it a run for it's money if the group backing it can get it together without going overboard on the DRM side, which I don't think they will be able resist.

For all the critism of M$, me included, I don't believe it would be pretty or good to see them crash & burn. A good kicking with a few scorched bits wouldn't go amiss though, just to keep them honest and redistribute a few pennies

324214 2005-02-12 08:31:00 I actually don't see anything really wrong with microsoft. Sure, I can complain about their prices or something, but then, a lot of things cost money anyway.

But, it is good to have someone to groan about.

Poodles can also be viewed as beautiful and friendly but I wouldn't been seen dead taking one for a walk.

But I digress.
As soon as linux developers stop taking themselves so seriously and develop a version that doesn't baffle/terrify newbies and every hardware manufacturer supports their gear with dedicated drivers then microsoft is doomed to lose serious market share.

Mac is irrelevant. I am not knocking macintosh users. But they are and will always be a niche market catering to a certain section of the population that prefer aesthetics over power.

324216 2005-02-12 20:31:00 I don't really want Apple to replace MS although I much prefer using my Mac.
A Rolls Royce just wouldn't be the same if everyone had one.:p
Mac isn't as closed as some seem to believe but one does have the benefit of dealing with just one company if something goes wrong. Having a PC company blaming MS & MS blaming the hardware manufacturer leaves the poor owner in a no win situation. With a Mac the buck stops at Apple. If you want to swop out the various parts of it then thats on your head.
