1423744 2016-07-28 06:13:00 Hi Folks,

I have successfully downloaded Win 10 to my desktop but am having a devil of a job downloading and installing to 2 laptops. They are both HPs and I believe the problem might be due to HP ProtectTools Security Manager.

Currently I am part way through the process with my own laptop (yet to look at SWMBO's). This is an HP ProoBook 4530s and the OS is Win 7 Pro. The installation fails and I get the following message "Some apps need to be uninstalled (not compatible with upgrade) - HP ProtectTools Security Manager". I give it permission to remove the offending software but it comes back with the following message "Error 1325 H-P is not a valid short file name". The current message showing on the laptop is "We couldn't uninstall these apps - You'll need to remove these apps yourself and then select Refresh. These programs need to be uninstalled because they aren't compatible with the upgrade. HP ProtectTools Security Manager"

Is it safe to simply uninstall the security manager? Is it simple to do?

I am presently downloading both the 64 & 32 bit versions of Win 10 to a USB stick just in case everything turns pear shaped.

Many thanks for any guidance.

Michael

1423745 2016-07-28 06:51:00 You will need to go to Programs and uninstall the program,I did a Samsung Laptop last week and it needed a couple of the Programs that came with the Laptop uninstalled before it would go ahead with the install
The Microsoft Media Creation Tool is the way to go with the creation of a ISO for use with either DVD or USB Stick

1423746 2016-07-28 06:53:00 Or do a clean install. That'll probably fix it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1423747 2016-07-28 07:28:00 Got 3 PC's here all needing upgrade before the end of tomorrow, one is a HP doing the exact same thing with the exact same program, BUT I cheat :D I've already opened the All in one, removed the Hard Drive, threw in a temp drive, installed W10 fresh, activated the hardware so it doesn't matter if that one doesn't get done by tomorrow, can still upgrade/install from fresh which is whats going to happen on Saturday or Sunday.

Basically mid night tomorrow the option to free upgrade is all over - gone. The HP actually came up with a counter, and the number of hours /minutes counting down till midnight Friday.

Bloody typical -- Leave it till the last minute.

1423748 2016-07-28 08:21:00 Yea we've had a few calls today too, for the Windows 10 upgrade.
We have told them that it is too late for us to do it now, as we are fully booked, but you can do itself and hope it all goes well. :D
Make sure you have a backup first!

Michael

good luck with that.
HP Crapware, its a pain to remove. In the past had to uninstall other HP crap before that would uninstall.
Yes its safe to remove. Most of the HP stuff isnt needed and are better off without it

1423751 2016-07-28 23:35:00 Thanks all for the assistance.

Have just had a look at the HP crapware, specifically with HP ProtectTools in the title, on my laptop and I am uncertain what to remove. They include:

Device Access Manager for HP ProtectTools
Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools
Face Recognition for HP ProtectTools
File Sanitizer for HP ProtectTools
HP ProtectTools Security Manager
Privacy Manager for ProtectTools
Theft Recovery for ProtectTools

I think that is all the HP programmes that have ProtectTools in their title. There are of course a number of other HP programmes listed but I presume they should not be touched.

My question now is, should I just remove HP ProtectTools Security Manager or are there others on the list that should be also removed?

All guidance much appreciated!

Regards
Michael

1423752 2016-07-29 02:49:00 It's funny with all that crapware you keep on thinking oh can I really remove this or that. Couple of weeks ago I had to do a clean install of win 10 on a laptop and guess what? Yep, ran perfectly well with NO crapware! It would be running faster as well. linw (53)
1423753 2016-07-29 03:21:00 Hi all,

No luck so far in removing HP ProtectTools Security Manager (not helped by having a power outage for some time). Have been to the HP Forum but haven't found a method that works. I keep getting an error message as mentioned in my 1st post. Clearly this crapware is fairly tenacious.

Hi 1101, do you remember what you removed before you could remove PTSM? Or should I just go for it and remove the lot - by that I mean the list I gave in my 2nd message?

Thanks again.
