1420870 2016-05-23 09:20:00 Can any of you august and educated people or wood-butchers identify this timber please?
Pretty sure it's a native, not Rimu, has a different smell.72177218

1420871 2016-05-23 10:04:00 I think the light one is Kahikatea (used i think in kraft paperboard liner boards), which I recall seeing similar years ago at NZ Forestry Research or Kinleith Pulp and Paper Mill. kahawai chaser (3545)
1420872 2016-05-23 10:05:00 A guess, I think it might be Matai - or Totara. I can't comment on the smell because the only time I've seen it was when a mate had nearly completed some furniture and he was in the process of waxing it. The smell of the wax disguised any natural smell of the wood. WalOne (4202)
1420873 2016-05-23 10:21:00 The timber is the same piece, one taken with a flash.

Thought of Totara, being a red timber.

Just googled Matai and is very similar that.

1420875 2016-05-23 20:03:00 Could also be macrocarpa which has a strong aromatic smell. However on furniture you can't trust the colour as it could be stained. Macrocarpa varies in colour from similar to pine to slightly yellow or orangy and can also look like rimu.
Once you've smelt it you won't mistake it for those though.
