2016-05-23 03:09:00 | Can anyone explain why a car which is not powered by a petrol engine has double the ACC levy. This includes Diesel & Electric, but not Hybrid. They are saying that a Diesel or Electric car is twice as dangerous as a Petrol one. At very least they are less likely to burst into flames on impact. It also makes a mockery of the Government's encouragement to go electric. Also, my 2005 Suzuki Swift is twice as dangerous as a Morris Minor, Ford Prefect etc pre-1975 :wub

Actually: Electric vehicles would be subject to road user charges, but the government has agreed they will remain exempt until at least 30 June 2020. |

2016-05-24 05:01:00 | Wrong mzee. www.aa.co.nz Still doesn't explain the 100% increase in ACC on diesel and electric cars. I am referring to ACC only here, not money grubbing accountants cooking the books for tax purposes.

2016-05-24 05:10:00 | Actually: Electric vehicles would be subject to road user charges, but the government has agreed they will remain exempt until at least 30 June 2020. Electric vehicles may be exempt from road user charges at the moment, but are currently charged an ACC levy of 100% more than that of a similar Petrol powered car. As for road user charges for Diesels, this is a hang over from early days when most diesels were off road. Now diesels are common in all types of vehicles so diesel should be taxed at the pump. Marine, Agricultural and any other off road users should claim a rebate.

2016-05-24 06:55:00 | Apparently diesel powered vehicles do more mileage per annum so are more likely to be involved in accidents. | Whenu (9358) | |
2016-05-24 08:42:00 | This used to be the case when most diesels were commercial. Now we have the light weight high speed diesels in small cars which do a relatively low mileage. Its all far too messy. The argument that the risk is greater over a higher mileage is not valid. If this was the case and I used several cars the risk value would decrease? I don't think so. The ACC levy should be based on the safety features of each individual car, and its crash test performance. The ACC levy should have nothing to do with sales tax on fuel, which should be included with the fuel at the pump. Electric cars would have a Road user Tax based on the power consumed, or on mileage.

2016-05-24 23:31:00 | Its all just a money grab by the govt . ACC is awash with spare unused money. Why would anyone be surprised if its not fair ? :banana Is it fair that the self employed can claim back depreciation,petrol/deisel,insurance,servicing,repairs , when those not self employed cant claim a single thing back against tax ? There's a real rort .
