1420825 2016-05-25 00:23:00 Is it fair that the self employed can claim back depreciation,petrol/deisel,insurance,servicing,repairs , when those not self employed cant claim a single thing back against tax ?

Yes.

If a vehicle is used as a business vehicle then it incurs those costs because of it. As for depreciation, that's not so great, unless the vehicle is dumped once it reaches no book value.

We claimed it once, then the business ceased for a while. Vehicle still in use. So you have to pay back the depreciation you claimed.
**** that. Never did it again.

1420826 2016-05-25 01:54:00 Trucks I think causes far greater damage (I saw the aftermath mayhem when the petrol tanker exploded/crashed in Manukau). Also a couple we knew were wiped out when a overweight logging truck lost it's load around Rotorua. Apparently that driver had killed before from trucking. Perhaps higher ACC reflect this, regardless of distance traveled.

Maybe ACC demerits should be introduced to drivers/companies. Those that flout safety rules, and repeat drink drivers, speedsters, careless drivers, in addition to fines and usual licence demerit points.

And confiscate the vehicle.

. . and collect enough fines to pay off all NZ's debt & may us tax free :)
Of course to do that you'd have to include those who bowl through red traffic lights .
Can you please include those who manage to take up 2 car parks because of their non existent parking skills & those who tailgate/follow far to closely .

Traffic fines are hopeless, they dont stop anything .
Just get rid of fines & make them re-sit their drivers lic instead . If you break they traffic rules you obviously need to be 're-educated' . That would be such an hassle for most, taking 1/2 a day off work to resit (and fail ) your lic .
Could be more of an punishment than a fine thats so easily paid & forgotten .

1420830 2016-05-25 23:38:00 Our system of Rego has some good points and bad, compared with Australia/Queensland it's straight forward with upfront charges built into the Rego for the upkeep of the Roading Infrastructure where here it's built into the cost per Litre of fuel

Some costs for Queensland (second figure is the compulsorily Third Party Insurance combined with the Rego)
Registration Rego & CTP
4 Cylinder car $328.90 $647.70
6 Cylinder car $492.30 $811.10
8 Cylinder car $669.80 $988.60

Everyone in NZ that mows their lawns, uses there boat gets taxed regardless ,From a Fishing Forum they worked out that over 60 million was collected from Recreational Fishermen in a 12 Month period ,would say that it would be double for Lawn mowing

Thats the point, regardless of what the govt wants to call it, its still a tax.
Its a tax that gets lumped in with other taxes to pay for other stuff, not just roads etc.

But dont worry, the lefties are desperate to add some new road user charges & road tolls as well as more petrol taxes.
When that happens it will make those ACC levies seem like small change :annoyed:

1420832 2016-05-26 02:57:00 I actually don't mind taxes - except for ACC .
Better than the old system before there were govts and democracies . Taxes do cover things like providing roads, hospitals, schools and so on . Mostly anyway .

ACC was one thing in theory, but these days you pay the money and then once injured everything is blamed on age related wear and tear . Regardless of age .

Friend battled ACC for years . Recently she was treated for a neck problem, new symptoms developed, she saw the original surgeon who said, no, this is shoulder not neck .

ACC then said she must prove it isn't related to the original neck issue .
Er . . . . . right .

I actually do not mind tailgaters because when ever they tailgate me I only do one thing slam my brakes on as hard as I can as they hit the towbar I accelerate . I consider myself possibly West Aucklands only tailgater retrainer and have left a trail of wreckage behind my cars, trucks and buses .
My most famous one was in Redwood street Blenheim when I slammed the brakes on my E93A with my screaming flatmate onboard on a Triumph 2 . 5 Mk11 which did have a Stag grille before it went through a letter box and crashed into a car in a driveway .
