642272 2008-02-20 21:44:00 A mate has two HDD's that make no show in bios. An 80GB & a 120GB. Both ATA. Said they were working when he removed them from his com a while back. Battery and Bios settings both good.
He's bringing them to my place to try in my com as slaves/see if they register.
I had the same thing happen to a HDD. Took it and a CD RW to a shop for a checkup, outcome was that the logic circuit was stuffed. From memory I think this was the result for the HDD. Sent it to the bin.
Would that be the case with mates drives?

642273 2008-02-20 22:00:00 Were /Are they on Auto in the BIOS?

Not on disabled?

642274 2008-02-20 23:06:00 And have the little toggles been taken out at the back? Had the same thing. End result: I'm a n00b. Lol Thebananamonkey (7741)
642275 2008-02-20 23:36:00 I presume HDD detection in BIOS was Auto. Will check this when he brings com/Hd's here and the jumpers would have been in proper place. Mates a bit savvy with coms so he wouldn't miss jumper settings.
I've been googling the question and there seems to be a lot of pointers to the causes.
No use putting the drives into my com as Master if it contains an OS because it won't be found. Could do it a couple year back, but can't now. So will just add as a slave. Only want to see if drives can be found.
I think they may be past it, but will have a look anyway.
Thanks guys

642276 2008-02-20 23:45:00 just remembered; he's trying to add either of the drives to his girlfriend's com. Its only got a 4Gb HDD in it at mo and he wants to give her more space etc.I don't know the make/model of her com, but, it could be a bit old and the BIOS or HD detection in it cannot recognise a drive of that size(80 or 120Gb).
Know more later.
cheers

642277 2008-02-21 00:06:00 You'll have to see if there's a BIOS update for it then.

Otherwise, even if you manage to install something on it, it'll crash.

I came across a similar thing, when I installed an 80 GB hdd (the original was 10GB).

I installed Windows 2000 on it OK.

But it crashed constantly getting into 2k.

Until I updated the BIOS.

But if there's no update to fix it, not much you can do about it. They'll have to replace the mobo.

To a more recent one

642278 2008-02-21 04:26:00 Make sure that the jumpers on the back are set to slave and master not two slaves or masters or your bios may not be able to pick it up nzjab06 (101)
642279 2008-02-21 08:34:00 Thanks guys. He hasn't bought it to me yet.May drop it in on his way home from Timaru where he's a theatre projectionist.
He said yesterday that he had installed WXP Hm to it. I gave him 3x sticks of SDRam(512 total) I had to boost com which only had 2x64's in it.(has 4 slots)
I ll check the Bios and jumpers when he gets it here. If my com finds the drives I guess he'll either have to update bios, mobo or try a 20-40 Gb HDD. I have a 20 here to try with.
Thanks again.

642280 2008-02-22 06:31:00 Years ago I had a situation where only a small drive was recognized by Bios. I found that so long as the primary master was the right size & bootable, Windows picked up the big slave as well. mzee (3324)
642281 2008-02-24 10:53:00 That took a while for me to get back to this thread. The 120 GB HDD wouldn't spin-up so it was put aside. The 80GB HDD was found in my BIOS ok and eventually showed in mates com fitted as a slave drive as mzee mentioned it should.
Mates girlfriend doesn't know what to fill the drive with, but, I think she wants to get about half of my music collection on it. She will be disappointed when I tell her that I can't do it, legally.
thanks guys
