642173 2008-02-20 09:13:00 anyone know what is the best defragmenting software available for vista home basic? thanks.. jonkimnicko (10061)
642174 2008-02-20 09:31:00 I use Auslogics. Works well for me. Way better than the built in cr4p. There's a registry defrag there too. Not sure how much it does, but I run that occasionally too. Might as well. Thebananamonkey (7741)
642175 2008-02-20 09:46:00 I also use Auslogics (www.auslogics.com), seems to be a bit faster. Here are a couple of defraggers (www.snapfiles.com)with ratings and reviews... kahawai chaser (3545)

642177 2008-02-20 10:02:00 Yep Auslogics Defragger is pretty quick, only takes 50 minutes to defrag my 250GB hard drive. :D jason_f90 (3544)
642178 2008-02-20 10:31:00 jkdefrag, much better than auslogics psuedo defragger...

642179 2008-02-20 11:10:00 Defragmentation is a waste of time on any modern filesystem. Fragmentation was a problem in FAT for small drives but should have no noticeable effect on any modern system. Furthermore unless your defragmentation program uses only atomic actions (and is slow as a result) it may corrupt your disk if the power fails part-way through. TGoddard (7263)
642180 2008-02-20 18:33:00 O&O is the best.

As for the comment by someone that defragging is a waste of time, bollicks!

642181 2008-02-20 18:56:00 This is an interesting one because I have read elsewhere that with a modern HDD and a NTFS file system there will be little or no noticeable difference to the speed of the computer whether the HDD is fragmented or not .

As I recall the article said that the Fragmentation of the Page File could be a problem, but even then you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference if that was fragmented or not either .

As I recall the Article said that to Defrag the Page File turn it off, reboot and turn it back on again . Apparently most Defrag programmes don’t touch the page file?

I look forward to further discussion on the matter . :)

642182 2008-02-20 19:19:00 I've never had to turn the page file on or off .

With any program Ive used for defragging .

Altho with O&O, youve got the choice of doing it in Windows, or it'll defrag before it boots into Windows .
