2005-02-26 04:36:00 | I'm planning on buying a new computer some time in the next couple of years, but I need money to do that. I'm a student at high school in Wellington, hard-working and competent. In the end of year exams last year I got Excellences in everything, minus two merits and one achieved, I believe. That's about 10 Excellences in each of 6 subjects. I'm doing Maths a year ahead of my school level. I'm interested in computers and technology, and have been doing some web design over the last few years. I can hand-code in XHTML Strict and CSS. I've also done 3D computer modelling of projects for Graphics at school, and 3D animation. I'm saving money for a better computer so I can do more of this, as well as image and video editing, and play the latest games in my free time. I'm looking to do a bit of work to make some money so that i can then buy this new computer. I'm planning on doing around 5 hours a week, at $10-$20 per hour. I can convert an outdated messy tables-based website with formatting tags all over the place to sleek, efficient, modern CSS, either keeping the existing style or implementing an entirely new one. CSS has many advantages over tables and in-line formatting, and makes sites load faster and easier to update both content and styles. I'm also willing to do more rudimentary computer work if it is required. For example, I can take a print brochure or similar and format it for the web, if the source images are available. Now, I'm not going to get myself kicked off the forums by asking if anyone has any work for me ;) , but rather I'm going to ask whether anyone has any suggestions of where I should go to find work of this sort. PM me for the former, post for the latter. Atreides.

Hit them with the sales pitch, use your showcase site to demonstrate what is possible, assure them it can be molded to fit there needs perfectly, Have some concrete hosting plans available (local web companies charge over 5 times in some cases what the service is worth) garenttee you can have it up and running in a couple of weeks, and provide them with a back end app to update the site themselves. Pocket your $500 cash and move onto the next sale, before you know it you will be awash in work and living the dream. If your any good at websites that is, and have a knack for selling your product/skills. |

2005-02-26 08:51:00 | I agree with Metla, in this day and age it's a case of "Don't tell me how good you are, show me what you can do". A well designed website, that looks professional, and yet is innovative works wonders as a selling point. After all you're competing with a thousand other kids who think they can bang to gether a website. | Bam_Bam (7437) | |
2005-02-26 10:22:00 | "Don't tell me how good you are, show me what you can do". Even more so with the introduction of that heathen swine otherwise known as NCEA.

2005-02-26 20:17:00 | one question mate, how is it that year 10 has exams? Unless he's been moved up a year, it's probably because some schools allow you to sit the exams as part of the curriculum. Other than that, no one should care because NCEA sucks.

2005-02-27 00:22:00 | i read his website, says hes in y10 but he does y11 maths, makes no bloody sense at all, if thise marks were from your schools exams then they mean jack squatt, they have no significance because they are not set to a proper nzqa standard | Tux (606) | |
2005-02-27 00:50:00 | Yes, Tux. Last year I was in Year 10, doing NCEA 1 Maths, but not other subjects. You're right that the school exams do not count for anything significant, but I was providing some perspective of my work standard. Also, I did get 6 or 7 Excellences and two Merits in Level 1 Maths. I don't quite see how it "makes no bloody sense at all" that I could be doing Maths a year ahead of my other subjects. My existing website is a bit old, and was done with Dreamweaver templates. I'm currently putting together a new site, presenting myself as a web business. Hand-coded, XHTML Strict and so forth. I need to come up with a name though, and I should probably register an actual .co.nz or .com domain name. Need a company name to get the domain name though. Paradise have a few web hosting and domain name package things (www2.paradise.net.nz). 20 MB storage with 500MB traffic costs $20 every 28 days. Reasonable? scope out some companies that need a better net presence. Yes. Companies, yes... From what I can see, I've basically got two choices regarding where I go: One, I can try to market myself as a web design company, going straight to clients and offering to build them a site. Which is feasible for small businesses. Or Two, I can get some sub-contracted work for an existing company. Two is probably less demanding on my time, and more reliable in the long run - I'd always have work. There are two ways I could find clients for option One. Find their old tables-ey websites, and go from there, or find businesses which don't have websites at all. However, i don't know where I'd go to find these businesses or their websites. And I don't know where I'd go to find a web design company to get work for either. I do realise that the first step should be to get my new website up, regardless of having a name or a domain. I'll do some more on that this week. :)
