328083 2005-02-25 05:50:00 Hello to all PF1 users . I am doing the World Vision "40 Hours" Famine this year to try raise some money for children in crisis who are not as fortunate as many of our selves . If able, please sponsor me . I have checked with Bruce and Jen and been given the  Sponsor me at . famine . org . nz/techie" target="_blank">www . famine . org . nz Rough guide of how far your money will go:

$1 will provide an appointment for a sick child at hospital in Papua New Guinea
$3 will provide a meal for a family of four in Papua New Guinea
$5 will provide overnight shelter and food for a child in Mongolia
$17 will clothe and provide school supplies for a child in Mongolia
$25 teaches a Bangladeshi street child to read
$30 will provide a small business loan to a family in Papua New Guinea
$42 will reunite a homeless child with their family in Mongolia
$67 will provide a counsellor with training on AIDS prevention, care and support, to help a local community
$80 will provide education at a transit school in India for a child released from bonded labour
$100 will feed a family of four in Cambodia for just over a month
$133 will buy a sewing machine, which will help provide a living for a family in Tanzania
$150 pays for the release of a child from bonded labour in India

As you can see, we can easily change the life of some people by doing one less thing; one less drink, etc . Let's all help out shall we?

Below is a template from World Vision for you to read:

328084 2005-02-25 06:44:00 I am doing a No Technology Famine for 20 Hours.

You want people to give you donations for going less than a day without using a computer.

I'm sorry, but that is not the purpose. I don't make anything out of this. I can say to you, most of my friends don't do anything, but still take part in collecting money. Sorry guys, but I must say, if you don't want to give, its ok. I don't want to be pressuring anyone.

328086 2005-02-25 07:53:00 you do realise that 70% of your money goes to administartion costs, id much rather sponsor a guide dog, at least then you'd know itd have a bright future healping someone who is really in need. Asia has had a population explosion, something aid cannot cure, but contraception. Tux (606)
328087 2005-02-25 08:03:00 Come on guys, be a bit 'charitable' :annoyed:

Looks like I'll be sponsoring my niece to not eat for a while . . . will be interesting to see how she copes for 40 hours when she realises she can't have pizza!

For me 40 hours without a computer or TV would be sheer torture, so I say "Good on you Techie" for giving up something that you like for the good of others ;)

328088 2005-02-25 08:27:00 Good on you Techie. I have my own children to sponsor but I'm happy to see you raise awareness here. Winston001 (3612)
328089 2005-02-25 08:58:00 Man I wish I could pay for intarweb transactions :( Edward (31)
328090 2005-02-25 11:27:00 you do realise that 70% of your money goes to administartion costs

Tux, can you substantiate this claim? Certainly it cannot be this high, can it?
Strommer (42)
328091 2005-02-25 11:33:00 unfortunately (as with most claims people propagate) i cannot, as i dont have the evidence, although it is widely known that a certain percentage of that amplitude is taken for administratve costs Tux (606)
328092 2005-02-25 11:34:00 world vision is really quite a corporate entity rather than a charitable organisation in the way it operates, Tux (606)
