327645 2005-02-23 18:59:00 One of my friends recently bought a small car that has a Sony Minidisc in it, with only one playable disc. I thought she should save up and replace it with a CD player as soon as, but in the mean time thought I would Google it to see whether there is no cheap recorder, etc. My question - is this Minidisc similar to a tape in that you need a seperate recorder for it or does it usually sell with a radio as well (As you can see I know nothing about it so please forgive me for asking the stupid questions).

327646 2005-02-23 19:24:00 You need a recorder. There's usually tons at places like Cash Converters for a reasonable cost. Media is a bit expensive though.

They aren't nearly as convenient as a CD player but they are still ok.

My car fortunately came with both MD and CD, so I use predominantly CD's and have a couple of MD's just so I can say I use the MD player.

327647 2005-02-24 01:33:00 MD is prob ok if you do a lot of recordings. But given there is MP3's its less.
I got a MD mini stereo some yrs ago, still have it now. I just dont use it much except for recordings. My 4 yr old blank discs are not opened yet, some of them. You can't buy MD songs either. So its really a unit playing your own songs u have prepared.

In a car CD in the boot like many say, can you do a hard drive in the boot? Just a flash of idea. Or with these Ipods etc. you prob wont need that maybe a digital line to the car stereo.. if thats possible.

327648 2005-02-24 01:52:00 MD's like DAT: a great technology which never caught on, so never got the huge price decreases needed to catch on. :(

They are still trying ... the new version puts 1GB on a disc, and the drives can still play the old lower capacity disks.

327649 2005-02-24 10:41:00 I had my MD stereo since 1999. It was a waste, yeah its a trendy good looking silver eye catching sexy stereo.

For such money I could of got something much better.
Funny, I am still using those same MDs discs I am using some yrs ago. These days I just dont really record anymore. There is the computer now. My one is not MD Net. Its the classic.
Generally for pple, I say why do you need MD?? CD yup of course. But why MD?? IMO.

Yup, it didn't catch on.
I got mine cos I was younger and new no better back then. It was a pretty stereo. I thought I could get MD songs from the store. D'oh! I thought it was the technology out to replace cassettes.
