| 327366 | 2005-02-22 07:05:00 | I came across this story (story.news.yahoo.com) via Slashdot, about the broadband heaven that is South Korea. South Korea is probably the most wired place on earth, with rock-bottom prices for broadband that New Zealanders are unlikely to see until hell freezes over. Although this is not an article by a professional journalist, it is indicative and informative of the result of mass availability of cheap broadband. But it seems that the benefits are mostly to the entertainment side of things - gaming and downloading copyrighted material such as music and video. The South Korean government reportedly spent $11b on rolling it out. This echoes the much derided statements (www.zdnet.com.au) a few years back by the former Australian minister for IT, Richard Alston, who also added porn-freaks into the mix. This was in light of calls for the Australian government to subsidise the roll-out. Yet another Slashdot story (slashdot.org) reports on the British, Australians, and the Americans as being the heaviest downloaders of unreleased television programs. I am not aware of any plans by the New Zealand government to invest money in a roll-out in New Zealand, but should the government, any government, be spending taxpayers hard-earned dosh on what looks like a personal entertainment tool? There are other uses for broadband for sure, but the really important ones are commercial. As such, the interested commercial entities can fund it themselves. I hope the provocative title of this thread didn't cause any blood vessels to burst in the more reactionary members of this forum. |

But I changed after getting sick of the increasingly lags on the net using dialup . Small tasks, like maintaining my website, required longer amounts of time just waiting for pages to open, files to upload etc . After years of dialup with the service getting increasinly slower, it seems (or my patience getting shorter) I felt pushed into it . In the end I figured the extra $10 per month, and no installation fees worth the effort and so far it has been . Its great to be able to press a little button on the modom and bang you are online, no dialup, no waiting, no screeching . |

| 327371 | 2005-02-23 09:52:00 | A friend of mine goes through about 60gig a month, god knows how. I average 4 or 5 sometimes 10 if i have a downloading frenzy. Just recieving 20 odd emails in 5 seconds flat almost makes it worth it. Dont bother with porn, it's like blades of grass, heaps of it & all looks the same. I once advertised for a legal xp disc in the T&E wanted column. I got no replies for legal discs, untold offers for pirate copies for $50. Why pay for that. I got 2 discs in the end (legal) I thought i'd pass on this piece of useless information, now i can sleep at night. |

I always suspected that broadband was used mainly for stupid purposes - yeah, OK, gaming may not be stupid for those caught up in it, but it is entertainment. As the price of high speed internet comes down, I have thought about getting it, but my dial up works well with Proxomitron filtering. | Strommer (42) | ||
| 327373 | 2005-02-24 00:50:00 | Im going to be doing mass data-sharing between myself and a friend as soon as he gets wireless... The current upload speeds just suck too much to bother with Internet. | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||
| 327374 | 2005-02-24 03:35:00 | I'm not really concerned about browsing speed, but the only reason that I truly want is to surf the 'net & the phone is free for talking | Edward (31) | ||
