2005-02-22 08:30:00 | Any decisive advice welcomeCongrats, you have killed X from the sounds of it :D So .... it worked fine until you did the updates? Had Gnome in all its glory running? I'm picking one of the updates resulted in broken packages. Are you just left at a root prompt line now?

2005-02-22 08:42:00 | "If you can get into Ubuntu you can edit your fstab and Lilo/Grub.conf depending on which boot loader Ubuntu uses." This sounds mildly kinky in a cryptic sort of way :@@:

I'm picking one of the updates resulted in broken packages . Are you just left at a root prompt line now? uh . . . . . No, never made it to desktop, It update automagicly during the install, then it asked what res I wanted to run at, I nominated one, rebooted, went through the loading process, ended up at the above described location,Has the account name followed by a $ . . . |

2005-02-22 09:48:00 | Alrighty. And yes I did fgure to type in the user and pw. On boot I get "I cannot start the X server, Its likely it is not set up correctly, Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem" Now, I personally don't apreciate the OS referiing to itself as 'I'....though i supose that its better then "we".Selecting yes and viewing just brings up the date of the "I"....lmao. Logging in from the cmd prompt and running startx brings up 5438 billion lines of errors,of which I see only the last few, included in the motley collection is such gems as. Fatal Server error:No screens found (EE) failed to load module 104 (conection reset by peer) on X server "0.0" after 0 requests with 0 events remaining. No sybals found. Etc etc, there was more,but....meh. So i would presume i just have to reconfigure X in someway? edit-A couple i missed (EE) failed to load module v41 (module does not exsist) (EE) No devices detected

2005-02-22 10:36:00 | Keep it up Met,when you have mastered it we will have a go. Muha ha ha ha ha. I agree, what a joke. Not much different to someone trying to manage Win 3.1. Computers are supposed to be easier than they were 15 years ago. You could have a Mac connected to the internet within 10 mins of taking it out of the box.

2005-02-22 10:37:00 | Login and type: su - *Enter root password* cd /etc/X11/ mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.brokendefault xorgconfig Run that through selecting "Generic Vesa video device" as your graphics card. Then type: startx This should give you a nice friendly desktop system. Cheers Chill.
