327082 2006-01-29 02:43:00 NO !!! it has screwed Free to air TV to rubbish .

Sky:
Sky TV thats the pay TV station in New Zealand . Their customers are classic boneheads, when they have trouble with reception and find that “Sky” is going to bill them for fixing their reception, they call on their local TV & VCR repair shop thinking they can do it for nothing . Because they spent good part of their monthly budget on entertainment they think they should get a extra bargain from their local service department, Man I don't how many times I have heard “Is it alright if I only pay you $80 for that $100 TV repair” I wish I could of got a free lotto ticket each time I time I heard that line, who knows fixing TV might have been worth it . I bet they don't go to their local supermarket and say is it OK if I only pay you $80 for that $100 worth of groceries” at least their local supermarket could afford it better than most TV & VCR repair shops around today .

Sport:
I get amazed by my customers who tell me “I don't watch TV what a load of rubbish, but if it is sport I will sit and watch every minute of it” . Give us a break !!! it's just a different flavour of entertainment, next they will try and tell us eat lots of strawberry ice cream it's non fattening .

I get DVD from amazon for my entertainment, mostly ex old British comedy, the only way now .

327083 2006-01-29 02:46:00 We used to have it a few years back (basic package and asian channels).
Finished the 1 yr contract then chucked it in. Too expensive for what it is.

Although we enjoyed the discovery and history channels, we were we paying $50 for 6 asian channels, but only watched one of them, Japanese. So we were effectively subsidising the other 4 chinese channels, because the Chinese viewers were paying same price, but got 4 channels.
Anyhow, tossed it in and internet connected. Now I just download all the programs I want from overseas, and with ads removed too!

If only Sky would let you pick which channels you wanted and payed for only those channels, I believe they would have a lot more customers.

327084 2006-01-29 03:20:00 NO !!! it has screwed Free to air TV to rubbish. Are you trying to say that there was a time when quality TV was not an oxymoron? Are you suggesting that the TV machine has a function other than sucking out the few remaining braincells tha masses have between them?

If one wishes to pay good money to be stupified, one may as well just become a serial binge drinker or some other drug destroyed vegetable.

Yuck... build a bridge.. get a life... it's a bad drug even if it's the hi-class "sky" version!

Actually i'm just jealous, i wish i had the time to turn into a vegetable every night! :p

327086 2006-01-29 03:53:00 No - too expensive. A computer is far more interesting and interactive. Oldferix (5581)
327087 2006-01-29 04:08:00 We got it because getting a TV aerial installed was going to cost a fair bit more than a year's subscription (we're in a lousy TV reception area, and I got it set up for free because previous owner transferred his account to me). Then we decided on upgrading to the startup package (nature channels etc) because the extra cost still represents really cheap entertainment. And a major plus, when the major sport events are happening, we can subscribe on a month by month basis for the sports channels. Greg (193)
327088 2006-01-29 04:27:00 I have it..Well in a way my auntie and uncle has it

We have one satellite dish but two seperate packages.

My auntie uses it to watch the asian channels in eltham.

My uncle who's living at the same house doesnt really watch asian channels. He uses a different encoder therefore a different contract to my auntie. He uses it to watches sky movies,Cartoon network.nickle....uhh cant remember what the other cartoon channel was called.Prime ,Discovery channel and some more

Hong kong isn't doing very well either.

We have 20 or maybemore cable tv companies.Ones called Hong Kong broadband one is called cable tv is the one we are in.Cable tv is the main one that everyone use

The Hong Kong broadband is at the moment giving people free encoders to watch for free but their channels are quite awful.Boring..

Cable tv is quite good.Lots of channels.I watch it everynight. There's Animal planet,Bbc world,.I would say Cable tv here is equivalent to sky tv over in nz.

However what so annoying about sky and got my grandfather angry while watching the asian channels was that during the times he watches it at night at the most exciting moment showing the rain affects the reception of the programme. The stupid sky digital shows on display that heavy rain is affecting the reception.

Its very annoying.

I say I haven't seen a good satellit, cable etc company that shows good channels!!

I agree

327091 2006-01-29 20:56:00 No.

Reasons:

Cost - $60+
Inflexibility - why packages? (to flog off the rubbish, but increase the quantity to give the impression of VFM, most likely) I'd prefer a fixed cost per channel (say $2/channel/per month) with a base rental fee ($10/month) for the decoder.
Principle - can't seem to rationalise paying for tv when they still have ads (albeit between movies). I wonder if anyone's worked out how much of their sub is spent paying to watch advertisments. Now there's a money spinner...
