| 642087 | 2008-02-28 05:57:00 | To Supergran . . . You can start easily with a web editor like front page 2000 or the popular free NVU . Then maybe start by signing up with a free host, e . g . Netfirms Basic ( . netfirms . com/)or the popular 110mb (http://www . 110mb . com/" target="_blank">www . netfirms . com/)or the popular 110mb (http:) Many free hosts have their own free web editors . Perhaps download and use a free template from one of many templates web sites, e . g . steve's templates (http://www . steves-templates . com/), then up load your site to your host (use a free FTP program to upload your site - e . g . core FTP) . Then you can promote it in forums, search engines, directories, etc, if you want . You could start with a blog as well, e . g . try the Googles blogger, or use the simple Google Page Creator (You need a Gmail account) - easy to set up for a beginner . Later on though, it might pay to learn html/JavaScript/PHP etc, which allows more flexibility to design and modify your web site . Then maybe upgrade to a paid host and domain, which will possibly yield more features (scripting, bandwidth, increased storage space, email accounts, etc) and more ownership of your site . . . | 642088 | 2008-02-28 07:23:00 | I am making a very basic website for a friend of mine, and Danielnz's post looked interesting . I thought you had to pay $100's of dollars for domain name, then more to someone else to host the actual website . Can someone please explain how it works, cos at present, I am building it on Goecities, but want to transfer it when they get the business up and running . I don't mind emails if the above question breaks F1 policy, as I would hate to be banned from here . Registering a domain name and having it hosted by a decent domain host costs around $45 . 00 per year . Hosting the website is extra, and outfits like myself charge as little as $120 . 00 per year, which includes usual email assistance and support . If your friend's website is intended to be commercial then these costs are really good . If you'd like more info from a reputable website host drop me a PM . |

| 642089 | 2008-02-28 08:47:00 | Thanks for your post, but I already know how to do the website, that is the easy bit . Ok, so it is basic, but I just do it by handwritten html . I own dreamweaver and front page, and can't really get my head around either of them, it is easier to handcode . No my question was about buying domain names and webhosting . I wanted to know if any of the ones you buy domain names and webhosting are better than others . It is only a small business, sort of part time hire caravan company . To Supergran . . . | 642090 | 2008-02-28 09:26:00 | I'd suggest GoDaddy for domains. Great prices and a very user friendly control panel. However, don't buy hosting from them, or any other company that is heavily overselling or else you will be placed on an over crowded, slow servers in 99% of cases and you don't even need the space or transfer they claim to be offering you. Domain name providers are pretty standard, but hosts vary widely so be sure to test out their support system by emailing them questions before your order so you can judge the time and quality of their response. Work on paying around NZ$10 per month for around 1GB space and 20GB transfer. You probably won't need that much to begin with, but use this as a basis for working out how much you should be paying. The quality of tech support also varies with price, so if you want 24 hour phone support it is obviously going to cost more than that, but for the most part waiting a few hours for a ticket to be responded to is better value for most people. |

| 642091 | 2008-02-28 09:33:00 | Have a look at www . doteasy . com Free hosting, no ad banners and plenty of storage space for something like a small business site . I've been with them for a few years and I can't ever remember the servers being down . Oh and you also get I think 1GB bandwidth per month too . I used to have a real basic website also as part of my ISP account, but I decided I wanted my own domain in case I left the ISP later, and chose Doteasy for that also . |
