But it really struggled to put out the 4.6A the PC demanded, voltage dropped to 11V and the HDD wasn't spinning fast enough. So I stuck another two in parallel and it runs nicely.

I'm using the 5v rail right now to charge my cellphone :D. I don't have a charger for it, but the 5v from the PSU is close enough to 5.2v for it to be happy. I had to solder the wires to the phone temporarily :(. It's a Kyocera 2235 I got for free (three of em actually, plus a Gtran 4020 (nice phone!:D) and three Nokia 5120/6120s. From the Telecom Willis St place, the recylce bin - all working great, but the Gtran doesn't have a battery :(.

And I grabbed a pager with a nice big screen for the LCD.

See my thread about the Gtran (I need to wire up a battery and charger).

You can open these up and change the voltage ... look for the voltage divider across the output which feeds pin 5 (needs 1.25 V at the regulated voltage) of the MC34063 regulator chip. I even unsolder the chips --- I got a box of 80 of these chargers for a good price -- and build bigger supplies.
