328416 2005-02-26 09:16:00 Ok, This has nothing to do with PC's, but since your all such a smart bunch I thought I'd ask here

I live in the country, and a neighbour is complaning about the noise of my dirtbike. I would like to know the sound laws etc for a country enviroment and dB ratings etc. Does anyone know a website which can give me some info on this subject?

Thanks, Luke.

328417 2005-02-26 18:40:00 As far as I know in MOST areas there are no regulations on noise made during the day, however between 8:30pm and 8am (or something like that) there are strict regulations. I would contact your local council (or look on their website) for more info, as local bylaws vary from district to district. somebody (208)

no matter waht the laws says it pays to try and keep the locals happy . . . . . .

could you get a re-design of the bike to reduce the noise a bit??
could you talk to the locals and come to a agreement about when and where you ride it?

really? we have our cowshed on at 5 in the morning and have no complaints and a cowshed is way louder than a dirt bike, and if we did get a complaint we tell them to shove off because how else are you meant to milk and earn a living?

are you driving your dirt bike on the road or in your private property?

328420 2005-02-27 00:15:00 I have owned & ridden road bikes most of my adult life but and it's a big but - The noise of a dirt bike going round & round & round & round & round on a quiet afternoon drives me insane. It's an extremely invasive noise and no matter what you do you can't block it out.
A chat to the neighbors before they have reached the stage of doing something illegal to shut the noise up is a far better bet and a good silencer wouldn't go amiss either.

328421 2005-02-27 00:32:00 A good silencer just happens to be $600-$1000 for my bike, and keeping a high performance motocross bike quiet is extremly hard.
We try to work in with them, but would just like to know the laws etc incase things get nasty, so I'm not the one in the wrong.

We have lived here for 12 years and been riding since day one, these people have only lived half here have of that time if that.

328424 2005-02-27 00:50:00 Typically any council by-laws will have a level of about 85 dBA at the boundary, but I think a lot may simply not specify a level. In many cases a noise control officer makes a subjective call, and repeated viotations would easily see the offending equipment confiscated.

Everyone has a right to the "quiet enjoyment" of their property. so you could expect little sympathy if the local authorites are actually called in. The fact that a silencer is expensive is no defence, nor is the length of time you have been doing it.

On a public road the situation is possibly outside the local by-laws I believe.

328425 2005-02-27 01:01:00 Its Private Property. 4 other of my neighbours also have there own property and ride dirtbikes also, and have done for many years. There are also people who live alot closer than he does, and they have never complained, even though we have askd if the noise bothers them etc.

We have a trail going on, where we only ride after school till say 5.30, and on saturdays between 1 and 5.30.
