643237 2008-02-24 20:58:00 A friend has small shop. In the back room he has an XP Pro computer. He wants to pipe music into his shop. What's the best way to do this?

It seems to me that there are many alternatives here, both in software and hardware. Obviously, he could also use a straight, non-computer player, but he seems to prefer a pc-based system, possibly because of the ability to easily construct a library.

Advice would be welcome :-)

643238 2008-02-24 21:26:00 I"d simply get a stereo system with at least 4 speakers, connect the PC audio output up to it, and you're off rocking. That way you also have the option of playing a CD/Mp3 or the radio.

You can use any software you want, WMP, Winamp, Foobar..the list goes on.

643240 2008-02-24 22:00:00 You should be able to connect your PC to the input on the stereo using the lime green 3.5 mm output jack (I think that’s the right one). You can also use a program like Winamp (or Windows media player) to play CDs/MP3s. Lately (at home) I have been using a lot of Net radio and streaming music from the internet with sites like www.shoutcast.com The quality is pretty good, 128 bitrate, and you can listen to Jazz, Top 40, 80s tunes etc. then you don't have to worry about play lists. Can be a little bandwidth hungry though. jberries (13063)
643241 2008-02-24 22:07:00 Yeah thats right jberries, one of these (www.trademe.co.nz) is the cable he'd need, and extensions (www.trademe.co.nz) are cheap if needed. wratterus (105)
643242 2008-02-24 22:20:00 I saw this (www.listener.co.nz)article in the Listener last year where a wholesaler got invoiced by Phonographic performances NZ Ltd for playing background music in their warehouse without a license. bachelorno1 (6556)

A very good point to make though. Maybe it's safer just to stick with the radio...certainly something I wasn't aware of.

Happens with the radio too.A friend has a bookstore in town and told me a while ago that he's had someone in wanting him to register and pay for the radio music as other people could hear it.:waughh:
