| 642747 | 2008-02-22 23:37:00 | Hi there: bought a second hand imac and it auto logs in as a user account with admin privileges. However when I need to install software or run updates I need to put in the password. Suggestions have been to startup in single user mode and do some Unix stuff. Had a look but decided my skills weren't up to it. Another suggestion was to boot off the install disk and change the password from there. things didn't appear quite as expected. Running 10.5 by the looks. |

| 642748 | 2008-02-22 23:57:00 | See under System Preferences if it is unlocked so you can reset the password without knowing the old one or make a new admin account. Otherwise, yes boot off the 10.5 install disc and use the Reset Password utility. |

| 642750 | 2008-02-23 01:00:00 | Hey, I don't use Macs often, except to set them up when putting on display then re-format them once they're sold at work, but from my little experience, I can say that best solution to this is to back up any of your own data you may have placed on the computer, then under the user account section or whatever it's called in System Preferences, create a new account, set up your own password, log out, and log in with your new account, then restore whatever you need, and delete that old account. Should be as easy as that, I don't think you'll need to enter any passwords to create any new accounts, and as long as you have set up the new account with admin privileges (I think theres a tickbox somewhere or something) you shouldn't need any passwords to delete the old admin either. Hopefully it won't just auto log you in either, asking you to put in the password before getting into the OS, unless thats how you want it ofcourse. |

| 642752 | 2008-02-24 08:32:00 | sorry to say that booting of the DVD only shows the DVD itself and offers me the ability to change the root password. Booting normally and going to system preferences and electing to change the password puts me in a postion when I need to enter the password of the admin user (which I don't know) to perform this password change. :xmouth: :xmouth: |
