330479 2005-03-06 04:05:00 Well....
I had my play with Linux... altho it looks good its really f***in annoying having no out of the box config for internal modems, and the only drivers you can get cost $15 (I wonder if Linuxant are a cover for Microsoft in trying to get the extra $).

So, with that in mind... until I get hold of SUSE (if it doesn't have modem drivers forget it); or I get a driver that doesn't cost $15; or I get ADSL; no distro of linux is touchin my h/drive again

To you fullas usin Linux - I don't hate Linux, just the non config abilities of it.

330480 2005-03-06 04:18:00 be fair, it's not linux's fault, it's the stupid cheap software driven modem that many vendors shove in their computers cos they're cheap :annoyed: Edward (31)

If they don't produce a driver for free (seeing as you can download Windows drivers for free) or provide the source code so that a Linux driver can be made by the Linux community, then the only thing you can do is to support the manufacturer's who openly and freely suppy modem drivers instead. So, give your money/support to them by buying their hardware.

Linux is the innocent party in such cases as with your modem. :)

To you fullas usin Linux - I don't hate Linux, just the non config abilities of it.Nobody said Linux was a walk in the park and you need to be able to stick with it and not give up on the first hurdle. It is also 100% configurable right down to what you want in your kernel - try that on Windows :p

Think you got off on the wrong foot over your Winmodem and Linux is wearing the blame. I have SuSE 9.1 Personal (free) Edition here, but as it won't support your modem natively either, then I see you aren't interested in getting it now. :)

If you wish to buy a commercial version of Linux like SuSE or Xandros, you might find they have included a paid license for the modem driver so it will work out of the box. It will cost however a lot more than then $15 for the driver for your current winmodem.

As far as giving up at the first hurdle... I spent the greater part of the weekend on Linux - most of that trying to config the modem.

I think you guys took my comments out of context.
Ok yeah windows is highly supported by the manufacturers, and yes they should do the same for Linux. It was mainly frustration at not being able to do what I wanted. I will go back to Linux at a later date (I think Windows has a limited life unless it becomes more secure all of a sudden).
As for buying a new modem with a possibility of going adsl later this year; its not worth it; same with buying a modem driver (besides that I don't have a credit card).
For the time being, its gonna be Windows... the future will be a diff story :)

330483 2005-03-06 08:07:00 For the time being, its gonna be Windows... the future will be a diff story :)You know there is nothing stopping you still using Linux without internet access. You can play around with all the apps, learn how things work and get familiar with it. When the time comes for it to be hooked up via ADSL in the future, you would of already worn off your newbie shine :D Jen (38)

What? As in not be connected to the internet. I don't know how someone could do that. Whenever an internet outtage comes my way I have no idea what to do with myself. The computer might as well not exist, it sure isn't much fun without the internet.

330485 2005-03-06 08:22:00 another wicked thing about linux is all the built in games it has, and most of them are pretty fun for when you are waiting for a download or something... Prescott (11)

But you are right ... sort of :p There is only so much you can explore on a system before wanting to explore off world with it, especially if it is your only PC and you can't use another to lookup Linux stuff on the net at the same time to try it out.

330487 2005-03-06 09:29:00 Indeed Jen, your posts are positive, but for many folk the step past Windows looks difficult. Maybe we have all forgotten how hard it was to get to grips with Win95. And for those folk who grew up in Unix at work, Linux is so natural.

It seems that in this thread, everyone has their fav distro, and looking at Distrowatch there is plenty of choice. I might just nip down to DSE and buy FC3 to have a go - the Unix language as shown in the previous posts does look daunting. One can but try ..

Cheers Tony.

330488 2005-03-06 09:52:00 I intend to keep playin with it.
As for not being able to access the net... I have it set up on one partition of a 3 partitioned hard drive, so I can still access the net, woulda been so much better to be able to do it with FC3
