642664 2008-02-25 21:02:00 Yes I read the Wikipedia entry, thanks for identifying it: very enlightening; it tells me that there is an incompatibility somewhere, probably due to age as Adata is a big manufacturer of cards and has probably got it right.

I have 2 of these AData 2GB cards and they are both behaving identically.

The cards were read OK in the internal reader of a computer in an electrical store where I tried them surrepticiously, so the problam can be resolved.

About Addata's first comment: I asked for some expansion and this is their answer:
"Dear James, thanks for supporting A-DATA product. install USB Host of PC. you can consult the manual of motherboard. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions. Regards, A-DATA Customer Service Center"

And Apacer's comments were unhelpful:
"Dear James Kirk, You may use card reader to format it and see what happend. Clear to see A-DATA's card may have capability issue or malfunctioned. I guess you can ask them to replace a new one for you. Thank you for choosing Apacer.Apacer Teamap.apacer.com".

I'm going to read the motherboard manual to see if I can identify some help; otherwise I'll buy a new (modern) reader: very cheap but a hassall to fit.

642665 2008-02-25 21:51:00 I was pointing my previous post at SurferJoe - he seemed to think the reader/card was faulty which can't be as it worked in your camera etc and other (smaller) cards work in your reader, when from what I read in the wiki page it would most likely be an incompatibility issue.. 642666 2008-02-28 01:20:00 Agent 24, and all others who answered,

Thanks I have SUCCESS.

I purchased the internal flash card reader recommended by Agent 24, from PB Technologies in Auckland: their code MMRLAS1611, called "LASER 16 in 1 USB Card Reader": a very small $15 ex GST. I ordered Tuesday and it came Thursday (to Tauranga).

The box is branded SSK, model SSK-ALLIN1-0545.

I have fitted it, and it worked staright out of the box, no software change.

I'm delighted; thanks everyone.

I've bought a second unit for my daughter who is experiencing similar problems but with cards by different manufacturers.
