642654 2008-02-24 01:28:00 The multiple-card reader is an internal 3½ inch unit made by Apacer; it is connected to one of the motherboard's USB2 ports internally.

I agree that something in my system may not like vards with 2GB capacity.

I took the card to a store this morning and it read fine in the internal SD slot of a brandnew computer.

642655 2008-02-24 01:32:00 And what was the brand/model of the reader in the shop?

Its probably later, than the one youre using

I used to have an Apacer internal reader in this. Until I found out I had to unplug it everytime, I wanted to format.

Otherwise the XP setup / install, would think it was a hdd, and make it C.

And hardly anything worked (If i kept it plugged in).

After XP was installed.

Thanks. I think you're right that it is the 2GB which is confusing my system. My Epson Stylus Photo 935 (which has card slots) won't recognize the card, nor will my Dell Axim handheld.
I didn't originally format the card as they come ready to use. The camera manual says not to format in a PC, but in the camera only (and only if necessary). I did a re-format in the camera to see if it made any difference; it didn't. I think the file structure is FAT32 but I can't prove it at the moment.

I've also sent a message to the reader maker Apacer to see what they have to say.

642657 2008-02-24 02:13:00 Speedy: I did the thing suggested by you and Brian_C. No success. The system told me it had nothing newer to offer.
I found under "disk drives" the entry "USB2.0 HS-SD/MMC USB device", right clicked this and worked through the screens with the result that Windows said it had nothing better to offer.
I went to Apacer and downloaded and applied the driver for this card reader (I find it is simply called 7-in-1 Internal Card Reader). But no improvement.
I think I'm looking at getting a new card reader; they are cheap as, but I don't know how to select a good one.

642658 2008-02-24 03:11:00 Does Apacer tell you what the maximum capacity for cards is for your reader? that might help you...

Otherwise, I have one of these myself: www.pbtech.co.nz

Works good, I've only ever used it for SD cards but it works fine (and reads my 2GB card no problem)

not sure if it does high capacity (4GB and above) cards though. don't think it does.

642659 2008-02-25 02:03:00 Speedy Gonzales: I've not heard back from Apacer yet. I've experienced no other problems with the reader; I've also used it for Compact Flash cards.

Agent 24: Thanks for that referral; I'll likely get one; it's certainly cheap enough, I'll wait another day in the hope of hearing from Apacer. It would be nice to have a reason for the problem, such as "our reader can't do 2GB", or whatever. I've looked for a reader made by the card maker Adata - they do have one but it's external.

That's probably what they would say en.wikipedia.org _and_larger_cards

Note the ref to the Epson RX300 photo printer only doing up to 1GB SD.

642661 2008-02-25 02:33:00 Well there we go then. Looks like 2GB cards are known to have issues - sounds like your problem alright Agent_24 (57)
642662 2008-02-25 05:18:00 I beg to differ . . . but I run SD 2's and 4's in FAT and FAT32 format, and I erase and/or re-format them all the time while they are in my SanDisk ImageMate 5-in-1 reader with no problems . Plugged into a USB2 port, that is!

The only thing I did wrong (once) was to do a total format and took out the hidden partition . . . which is not very hidden at all in the Device Manager . That got repaired by my Kodak camera automatically anyway . . so no big deal .

At this point you may have a defective reader or a blown SD card . But I cannot imagine the problem is one of bad design or function . For some arcane reason your system is just bollixed up somewhere .

My wife thought she was doing me a big favor (good intentions though) and bought some El-cheep-o SDs and yet they run perfectly well . . . so I dither with the idea that a card can NOT be readable . . . at least the set-aside and hidden partition . If you cannot see that partition . . . then it's not there and the card is flummoxed .

Just a thought .

642663 2008-02-25 05:28:00 Did you read the wiki link?

Many older devices will not accept the 2 GB size even though it is in the revised standard. The following statement is from the SD association specification:

"To make 2 GByte card, the Maximum Block Length (READ_BL_LEN=WRITE_BL_LEN) shall be set to 1024 bytes. However, the Block Length, set by CMD16, shall be up to 512 bytes to keep consistency with 512 bytes Maximum Block Length cards (Less than and equal 2 Gbyte cards).

According to James his reader is 4 years old. This screams incompatibility to me especially in the light of that statement.
