330459 2005-03-04 06:51:00 Final question - where does one get these distros from?Seeing you are on dialup, downloading them yourself isn't very practical. DSE has a variety of Linux distro's for under $10. Their current range is:
XC4037 CD Linux Mandrake 10.1
XC4040 CD Fedora Core 3 (FC3)
XC4042 CD Ubuntu Linux
XC4043 CD Knoppix/Morphix
XC4041 DVD Fedora Core 3 (FC3)

Otherwise, you can order them from www.copyleft.co.nz/ or https:

Xandros and SuSE both have commercial and free versions.

If you can't find someone selling the distro you want, one of the Linux users on PressF1 might be able to send you a copy. :)

Remember, as has been said Windows != Linux

I have used windows for a good part of 10 years now, from Windows 95, so I was always going to have a bit of trouble with Linux. I eventually got Lycoris 1.4 from a magazine, and have found it to be a very good, easy to use distro. It has a nice GUI, with a bazillion programs (KWrite to Tetris- I'm all set ;)), so all round a good experience, especially after running away crying after fighting with Mandrake 9 :annoyed:

330462 2005-03-05 02:03:00 Ok, I decided to go look at Fedora Core 3 (in other words to look properly, one must install :))
I do have a problem with config, my internal modem:
Soft V92 Data Fax Modem - a PCI device
Everything else was fine.
FC3 isnt recognising the modem, I'm not sure how to access Device manager (does FC3 have one?)
I also had a look online, unfortunately I don't have the credit facilities to pay for one from Linuxant
Can anyone help me?

330465 2005-03-05 02:23:00 try downloading everest and that should detect what sort of modem you have, then you can find the linux drivers from the makers website Prescott (11)

The only way to make sure is to pop open the hood and eyeball the thing. Whatever brand it is, the chipset is the important thing. Post the chipset numbers here and we can tell you whether it is supported by Linux or not.
