329555 2005-03-13 02:27:00 Bless Google. And fair comment Terry. Hubble's equation v = H*r tells us that galaxies further away are moving faster than near galaxies. This is not necessarily evidence that they are accelerating away.

But at the moment research on supernovas in distant galaxies suggests that they are accelerating. At these distances, red shifts are not much help. It is an interesting question.

Fred Hubble believed in the Steady State, but over the past 30 years the accepted model has moved to the Big Bang. Terry is absolutely correct - this and other theories we've discussed could be inaccurate, imprecise, or wildly wrong. You'll notice we've kept away from string or M theory.

But current science has a lot of highly intelligent people researching and thinking about this stuff all the time. For that, we must thank Albert Einstein. At its most intense, astrophysics and quantum physics become mathematical conversations. That is the only way to describe 11 (or 25) dimensional space, as in string theory. And maths describes particle behaviour which mere words cannot contain in sufficent space.

Eg. I've tried to keep saying "the speed of light", instead of "c". But usually in books all you'll read is "c" because interested people recognise it instantly.

Cheers Tony
Further to Martin Rees, he ends his book with a nice quotation ( but I don't know where it comes from) :-
" No mystery in cosmology presents a more daunting challenge than the task of fully elucidating how atoms assembled - here on earth and perhaps on other worlds - into living beings intricate enough to ponder their origins".

Very neat.
Cheers Tony

329559 2005-03-20 13:49:00 For Tony, who wanted a limerick...

On the day that the cosmos went Bang
Did Neanderthal Man say:"Well, dang.."?
No, he wasn't forlorn
'Cos he hadn't been born,
So was saved from an almighty prang.
