329882 2005-03-02 11:21:00 I want to ask you guys a question.
How many of you guys have heard the name "Iron Maiden". And no, I am not talking about the torture machine. I am talking about the band Iron Maiden. Almost everyone I know have never heard of a band called Maiden. That is very dissapointing...
Especially becuase veryone listens to homosexual rap!!!
I want bands like Iron Maiden, Priest, Metallica to come to New Zealand and show this country what real music is!!
Please share your opinions...
Cheers
Max

329883 2005-03-02 13:20:00 You didn't phrase your questions well enough for people like me to vote in this poll.
None of them fit my attitude.
Now as I'm not the demographic you're aiming for, that doesn't matter this time. You're assessing the support for your own enthusiasm for this band.
Fair enough...but try a bit more impartiality in your questions if you do another.
The concession question to the Olds (Like what's heavy metal?) would also be fair enough in some settings, but rather patronising here. Sure, my Olds couldn't have answered that, but computer literates like PF1 members presumably either know this stuff or simply don't care.

You did ask people to share their opinions, so (as an Old) I give you mine without a vote.

Have I heard of them? Yes. That's merely general knowledge.
Could I name one of their songs? No, don't normally listen to their kind of stuff.
Should they come here? Sure, if enough fans want to hear them.I won't be at the concert, but I won't moan about anyone else going.
Not much use to your survey, eh?

(If it's any consolation, that's about the same way my parents felt about the Beatles. And we won't even mention Elvis...)

It was meant as SARCASM.
I am not just assessing anything here, my likes and dislikes for the band do not matter. What matters here is that, IMO, rap is dominating the society (I hear its different don south) which I do promotes stupidity.
For instance, if you go to schools, you will find that the students there that do not do well are mostly those who listen to rap. On the other hand the brighter students listem to other kinds of music.

What I am looking here is for is not a suppression of rap or promotings of bands, but the promotion of different types of music in general.
Max (I sound very hyprocritical now dont I?)

PS: I value your opinion, but I dont see how the beetles and elvis have anything to do with this as what I am trying to promote is a musical genra rather than a particular band, and I set Irom Maiden as the heading because it was the band that pioneered Heavy Metal.

329885 2005-03-02 15:36:00 Well, that's different - now that we know what we're talking about.
Frankly, I assumed from your question phrasing & initial post that you were an Iron Maiden-obsessed teenager looking for reinforcement of your own ideas.
|My reply was based on that impression.
Obviously I was wrong - and for that I apologise.
You've raised some interesting points in your own reply, but it's too late for analysis & discussion right now.
I'll be interested to see whether you have other replies - and maybe we'll continue this discusion at a more normal hour...
P.S. No I don't think you're hypocritical, but you knock the Beatles & Elvis at your peril...
They're not irrelevant if you're trying to survey trends.
Neither metal or rap have had time to prove they'd last as long...

My post was based on that.
Seemingly I was wrong. For that I apologise.
You've raised some interesting points, but too late for discussion & analysis right now. Maybe later at a more normal hour - and maybe others have ideas?
(And by the way, neither the Beatles or Elvis are irrelevant if you're surveying trends. You see, their popularity has lasted roughly 40 & 50 years respectively. Will either metal or rap do as well?)

329887 2005-03-02 19:41:00 Well Scared eye, these are typical responses from people. Ask a simple question and you get irrelevant responses.

To answer your question, YES they should be bringing bands like that to NZ more often. In saying that though, they still are, Velvet Revolver has just done two gigs. May not be heavy metal but they still rock. Also, the Big Day out has brought bands like Metallica and System of a Down etc into the country.

As for your comment on rap, what rap? Rap is dead, whats left are the dregs at the bottom of the cup! Gone are the days of N.W.A, Boys in the Hood, Cypress Hill, Easy E, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube. Whats left is the washed up remains of these classic rappers who now rely on doing rubbish songs or featuring on CD's with c%&p singers like Nelly, Justin Timbalake, Usher, J Lo.

Cheers

Veale

P.S - Laura, Iron Maiden done such songs as Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills.

329888 2005-03-02 20:28:00 As long as the Aussie wharfies don't force them to cancel, like they did in '85 (or whenever) by going on strike, preventing them from bringing their stage over.
(No, I still haven't forgiven our Aussie mates for that)

As for coming over now, frankly, I don't care; having lost interest in them years ago.

But it does bring up the subject of why so many bands travel all the way to Australia but don't bother hopping over the Tasman: no decent-sized indoor stadium.
If we have a Bowie/Stones-type act, Western Springs is the only place big enough.
Remember the 80,000 of us that turned up to see ZZ Top back in the day?

I can't imagine the number of bands that have bypassed us because we don't have a big enough all-weather venue for them to play in.

Still, as long as Barry Curtis has his precious (but too-small) Pacific Events Centre in Manukau.

329891 2005-03-02 22:17:00 Lol.

Teenagers don't listen to Iron Maiden, Their most popular year was 1984. 20 odd years ago and concerts nowadays are generally people in their 30's or 40's.

Granted they are one of the best bands to ever grace the face of the planet and are still cranking some of the best music ever made but the glory days are far behind them nowadays and they won't be coming back.

Having said that they are still massively huge in Europe and South America, Headlining the Rock n Rio concert a couple years ago to 300 000+ people, and it was broadcast live to over 50 million. And they sold out Madison Square Garden in less then an hour on the Brave New World Tour ,a feat that few if any current bands can match...Brave new World being a great album and the first with returned vocalist Bruce Dickensin after a decade long absence (which if listened to may even be enjoyed by the "oldies”, Its a finely crafted album with well above average songwriting and musicianship, full of shade and fire). Dance of Death being their most recent work is another 10/10 album.

For what its worth Maiden base many of their compositions on history, literature and Celtic legends.

As for coming to NZ, even a sold out concert wouldn’t cover the cost and supply a profit, they wont come, NZ'ers don't support big shows in this day and age, Went to the last AC/DC show in Auckland years ago and the crowd was tiny, no surprise that they haven't come back.

Maiden did though play a show in Auckland back in 91, though it was so low key I didn't hear of it till 10 years later, Been sore about it ever since.

Dates were announced for NZ and Australia on the Brave new World tour 3 or 4 years ago, Lack of interest saw all 9 dates cancelled and the band instead played 2 extra weeks of sold out Shows in Japan….which gutted me as I was in Sydney at the time. (Dio cancelled a month later which gutted me even more)

If there are any old fans of the band make sure you watch the recently released Early Days DVD, It has 4 concerts (one of which is recorded on a digicam and is the First show after making their debut album, Featuring Paul Dianno on vocals its beyond any heavy metal fury I have ever witnessed, Putting even the likes of Metallica to shame at their finest (that being about 85-86 before they turned into the marketing machine making lazy crap weak and stupid music)

DVD also chronicles the bands 6 years journey from not being able to get gigs to touring the world with The Scorpions, Judas Priest and others. The next DVD in the series will cover the Powerslave album, which bought on a 2 year tour, massive success world wide and complete domination of America.

Up the Irons, 80 million albums sold and still counting.
