329840 2005-03-02 10:14:00 Hi guys - is there a program which could copy protect audio CD compilations someone might put together?

I know nothing is undefeatable, but something which would stop the average joe from ripping would be good...

329841 2005-03-02 10:45:00 Seriously, do you think if such a "reasonably difficult to defeat" system was out there, that the record companies would not be using it already?

Actually they are using as much as the average system will tolerate and still play, but how much difference has it made?

A few very deep scratches across the label side of the CD would work, but it has the side effect of the CD not playing, slightly counter productive.

For a music CD to operate, the "data" has to be read. If it can be read, it can be copied. Hard to copy = hard to read.

329842 2005-03-02 10:47:00 I doubt it. I would say if record companies cant copy protect their cd's we cant. Someone will find a way of beating it tho.

It would most probably be something like a dll file, or something. Like what major companies of games do, to protect game cd's from being copied.

329843 2005-03-02 10:47:00 Sure - but for computer illiterate people not familiar with programs such as Alcohol 120%, etc, the addition of the Cactus Audio Shield would be enough to confuse them.

I remember playing around with it for a while, but was wondering if there was anyone out there who could name a freely available program I could trial.

Like I said - enough to stop someone without good PC skills was all I was after.
