2005-03-02 00:35:00 | I find that on some hired movie dvd's that the sound and video go out of synch at some stage during the movie. At first I thought it was the rental disc but now it's happened a few times :( and I'm wondering if it's the player. I estimate about 10% of the dvd's I've played have shown some degree of out of synch.problem Has anyone else encountered this fault.? My player is an inexpensive DSE model

2005-03-02 04:19:00 | I agree - take it back, however.......... I too have a DS EL CHEEPO, which also has a problem. Somewhere between 3 and 5 times a movie, it stops dead. It then sits there, totally static for a varying period of time somewhere between 15 and 60 seconds before starting again. I took it back and had great trouble trying to convince the 15 year old sales expert that this problem happened on every disc I tried, including brand new ones. After a wait of about 3 weeks I got it back, same problem. At least it gives me a break to get a fresh can.

2005-03-03 20:28:00 | I had a DSE Mustek DVD player, and it would freeze with some DVDs, sometimes. I took it back a few days before DSE's 1 year warranty ran out, and they wound up giving me a new model. However, I found myself in a buying mood at Noel Lemmings and now have a Philips DVD player, and sold the Mustek to a colleague. Farmers sells the Hyundai DVD player with a 2, maybe 3?, year guarantee, and Transonics at the Warehouse carry a 2 year guarantee I believe. If I had to do it again, I would get a cheapie with a 2 or 3 year warranty (for no extra charge). I figure that in another 2 or 3 years there will be an advancement in technology, say with cheap DVD recorders, that the DVD player will probably be redundant anyway.

Sadly you still get waht you pay for these days. I have an el cheapo from K Mart for the kids and an Onkyo for the Home Theatre and there is a hell of a difference between the 2. I sat down to watch Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick a couple of weeks ago and found I had forgotten to multizone the onkyo before I sold it to myself so grabbed the Audiosonic from the kids and away we went. After about half the movie (pitch black) I ended up turning it off. Sat there and enjoyed the hell out of Chronicles of Riddick on the HT. I finally multizoned the Onkyop and played Pitch Black again. MY GOD what a difference. The Audiosonic was struggling with the colour contrasts and sheer brightness of colour while the Onkyo not only played it back brilliantly but the sound was 100% improved also which was something I had really noticed first time around. Even Mrs Dipstick finally realised what the difference was and has now ( reluctantly ) agreed that perhaps it was worth the extra dollars and cheap does not always do the same thing. Buy a player to do what you want but remember you will not get the same performance from an el cheapy as you will from the high end machines. I know many will cry bollocks at that but I suggest you compare the players you are looking at by playing the same DVD on them in the shops before buying. Most shops will have their players hooked up somewhere for you to view. Compare the same movie and I suggest you do NOT use a cartoon (Nemo, Bugs Life, Monsters Inc ) to check them out as those movies look great on almost any setup. |

2005-03-03 21:51:00 | Agree with you Dipstick you only get quality or maybe longevity if you pay for it. But I also embrace Steve L's argument that DVD players only could be obsolete within a relatively short time frame, hence the purchase of a cheap model

2005-03-03 22:29:00 | A lot of DVD jackets actually state you may notice a pause/jam partway through the movie. This is as the laser on the DVD player transitions between the layers on the disc, some do it better than others. www.dvdtown.com This kinda covers it, haven't got the time to find a more descriptive article. Edit: Sorta: www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk
