643684 2008-02-26 08:10:00 I got a 1gb DDR2 800 stick of Adata ram this afternoon hoping to run dual channel memory on my rig . I already had an identical Adata stick installed .

Anyway I take all the usual precautions before installing the RAM; used my anti-static wrist strap and clipped it to the case . Also touched the PSU just in case . I disconnected the power cables too . I work in the garage .

I boot up and nothing appears on the monitor . The LED on the monitor is orange and there are no beeps . I remove the new RAM try booting up only with the original stick but aaah it won't! I've tried every single combination I could think of to no avail . I also tried using the integrated graphics which didn't change things .

Then I also noticed these problems . When powering on, the CPU fan spins for around 3 seconds and then just stops . Also, I cannot power off the system by just holding down the power button like before .

My mate suggested clearing the CMOS battery which I did by removing the battery and reinstalling it after 30 minutes which didn't help too . I have stripped down the computer and rebuilt it which also didn't change anything .

The specs are in my sig . I got the graphics and hard drive off TradeMe, the CPU & motherboard from DragonPC and the case + PSU from Tastech .

Argggh this is soooooooooo depressing :( :( :(

Please advise me on what I should do! :(

643685 2008-02-26 08:20:00 How is the SATA plugged in??

Is the power for it coming from the PSU with an adapter??

Or is there a molex to SATA adapter in between?

643686 2008-02-26 08:21:00 I assume you checked all the Power Connections are in Snug - Esp the CPU and main power Plug.

You can also try a Different Power Supply, and power lead from the wall to the PC.

If its any consolation I did the exact same thing yesterday to one of my servers, it was a bit slow while doing some heavy work over the weekend so threw in another 512 Mb RAM - :( That was the last time it went.

New Board arrives tomorrow - sh*T Happens.

Is your Board still under warranty - if so it should be replaced.

643687 2008-02-26 08:29:00 I assume you remembered to turn the PSU back on?
I know the CPU fan will run for a real short time with the PSU off (residual power) when the front computer switch is on

643688 2008-02-26 08:29:00 Oh nooooo! :horrified Bummer! I feel your pain, mate....
Was the ram stick hard to push in, perhaps you've cracked the mb?
Any beep/s?

643689 2008-02-26 08:31:00 Be very very careful of leaving the PC on without having the CPU fan spinning.

I am sorry to know of what had happened to your PC :(

I assume you're talking about the hard drive. The SATA cable comes directly from the PSU and there aren't any molex connectors in between.

The power connections are fine to my knowledge. I used to be able to power off by holding down the power button for 4-5 seconds but now I can't!

I don't really have any other computers to test on at the moment; I do have an old ATX case with a 250W PSU which hasn't been used in 5 years. :S

---Edit---

Yep the board is under 1 year warranty but I don't even know what is at fault. I don't think DragonPC would like the fact that I used certain other components from other stores too. :X

@ Myth, yep the PSU switch is on. The PSU, video card and case fans are spinning.

@ feersumendjinnThe, RAM was a good fit however it isn't perfect I think. It's not like the ones where when you push it down the locks automatically click and secure the module, I actually had to manually turn the locks. This is normal though, on the manual it said that I actually had to manually clip it. There are NO beeps too.

If there is no obvious damaged caused Eg broken / Bent parts it should be covered.

643692 2008-02-26 09:06:00 Have a look at your ram slots with a magnifying glass and a bright light and check for bent/broken/shorting contacts, or loose bits off your ramstick contacts (pretty unlikely but worth a look). feersumendjinn (64)

How do they know my motherboard is at fault though??

It could have a dead CPU, faulty RAM, a faulty PSU, etc . It could be a part which I didn't by from them .

If I do want to get it fixed, who should I return it to? DragonPC, Tastech or the TradeMe sellers?
