643251 2008-02-24 23:21:00 I'm guessing this has been covered a million times but our internet is quite unreliable at times. I think we (at home)are about 4-5 k's from telecoms network. down here in Whitianga. quite often restarting the router fixes it. when it does poo itself all three of our pc's are out. The net (at work) which does vary in speed plenty does not really drop out. But then work is about 200m from telecom. What would be the most likley problem? Ron Bakker (356)
643252 2008-02-24 23:35:00 A firewall (if one is installed on all 3 of them) would probably stuff things up.

ie: Zonealarm.

HOW do u know the router is the prob??

Are there any firewalls on any of these? If so, what firewall?

643253 2008-02-25 00:18:00 From your description it sounds more like a router problem than firewalls.

If it were firewalls causing the problem you wouldn't expect the connection to drop on all 3 PC's at the same time.

So working backwards, whats the common components that affects every thing? The Internet Connection from the wall to the router or the router to the PC's.

If you reboot the router it resets and supplies the connections again, this means for some reason the routers getting things all messed up and stops traffic.

Seen this happen many times. I'd suggest doing the simple things first, replace the router and see what happens.

Well if they were all using a browser, at the time, ZA will do just that.

If its proxy service stops, so do you.

643256 2008-02-25 03:59:00 Ron have you checked if it is your modem that is going offline intermittantly, that would effect all 3 pcs and restarting the router would take just about the same time as the modem reestablishing the connection.
I have had 2 occasions this year where similar poor performance was fixed by installing an extra BT socket close instead of connecting the modem through a 20 metre telephone extension cord. Long ethernet cables are fine but long flexible telephone cables are bad news.
If you live 4-5 ks from the exchange you will allready have a weakish signal if it is further compromised by poor internal house wireing it could cause intermittant connection failure.
Just a thought.

643257 2008-02-26 17:16:00 Yeah our phone cable is quite long about 10m. Our router is the modem aswell, might see if I can borrow one from someone else just to take at least that part out of the equation. Cheers Guys Ron Bakker (356)
