331776 2005-03-08 00:30:00 Why do websites make us download ALOT more these days? sure we have broadband which means we download more...in a shorter frame of time....but that shouldnt mean websites can triple the content on their pages...like tvnz....I LOVED it when it was nzoom.com and fast to download on 56k....and now its tvnz.co.nz and its like arrgh...which is why i've moved over to nzherald.co.nz....i'm there for the news...not for the graphics or fancy side of it...

Dont you guys get annoyed when ur finally on broadband u can get a page quicker...but all of a sudden the page is upgraded and u now have to download alot more content to see what u want to see...

331777 2005-03-08 00:36:00 Those who haven't got broadband suffer worse.

Those who maintain sites should be connected through a 9600 bps serial line, and forced to use only that. They have very fast links directly to the servers, and don't know what it's like for their users in the real world.

Some of the UK university sites have been great for fast loading pages. They have always had expensive bandwidth, and emphasized usability over entertainment.

331778 2005-03-08 01:18:00 I totally AGREE

Not only is it the conflict of content versus entertainment it is also strongly indicative of gross inefficienies - raise your MS IE security settings and see just how many individual scripts clutter many websites (the worst must be Hotsnail) Why not consoildate some of them ? Why have them at all !

Similarly advertisers who get sold the pup of overly animated advertisements need to have their marketing heads read. The more intrusive and in-your-face the advertisement the faster and for longer I discount the brand.

TVNZ = won't be going back !
NZ Herald = can only tolerate a few seconds of those irritations !

PS: I would strongly urge Press F1 to reset the default on sign-in so that saving passwords on this machine is NOT by default ! That's another thing that turns me right off ! :(

331779 2005-03-08 01:46:00 I agree too but that's the nature of computing and markerting.

As computer hardwre gets bigger and faster so the progs are bigger so you need to upgrade again and again but it isn't going to change.

The more scope for advertisers to attract attention the more fancy graphics there will be and the faster connection you have the more they can deliver.

Time for Internet Lite?

Use Lynx on Linux - it MAY run on Windows too, I'm not sure. Its text based so it can be difficult to view graphic's oriented sites. Stuff the animations the marketing people insisted on putting on the site. :@@: :lol:

Lynx can run in a DOS window. Most people would run a mile from it though. Pity, because it is a wonderful tool.
