331473 2005-03-07 03:21:00 Hey,

This is a totally random question, but it came to me after talking with two English travellers last night .

England, Scotland, Wales and Northen Ireland (right??) are all part of Great Britian . . . and at the Olympics and Deaflympics they represent Great Britian, or the United Kingdom .

But, at the rugby world cup, each country took part under their country's name . Same with the Euro2004 (football) and the 2002 Football world cup .

How are they able to do this? I assumed countries that are part of one big nation must represent that nation, not their countries individually .

Sorry if this seems like a real dumb question to you guys (especially the 110% sports-mad people), I seriously can't believe I hadn't thought of this before . . . :)

cheers,
caffy

Great Britain includes the countries of England, Scotland, and Wales

England has existed as a unified entity since the 10th century; the union between England and Wales, begun in 1284 with the Statute of Rhuddlan, was not formalized until 1536 with an Act of Union; in another Act of Union in 1707, England and Scotland agreed to permanently join as Great Britain; the legislative union of Great Britain and Ireland was implemented in 1801, with the adoption of the name the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; the Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921 formalized a partition of Ireland; six northern Irish counties remained part of the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland and the current name of the country, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was adopted in 1927

e.g. they are independent countries. Like Australia and NZ.

But if you really want to wonder about something, consider this:

The Allblacks are professional paid rugby players, they are employees and work for their employer. No different to a man driving a forklift as an employee.

How come they are able to get injured in the line of their work, and OSH turn a blind eye? If we as an employee provided such an "unsafe working environment" how long would it be until we were heavily fined by OSH ....

Even worse, when one of them beats up a pregnant woman he gets preferential treatment in court.

But seriously, if you follow the rules and the spirit of the game, it should be perfectly safe, just as if you followed the rules of working in an office.
