643973 2008-02-27 03:08:00 I've been having a lot of problems watching DVD with my LITE-ON DVD-RW. About halfway/three quarters through the movie is just keeps stuttering, u know start stopping, no point in continuing watching the movie as it's irritating as hell. I thought it was just incidental at first but it's been happening on a handful of different dvd's now. Now does this LITE-ON brand suck or what? I was once told it was actually a really good brand.
Damnit

643974 2008-02-27 03:15:00 I don't know if it is a Lite On problem, but is the DVD you are playing a pirated copy or the genuine thing? I have heard that pirated copies often cause a problem with some of the newer DVD players about halfway through. Maybe some others on here can shed more light on that? lakewoodlady (103)
643975 2008-02-27 03:32:00 Check Lite-On's site as they often have firmware updates for their drives. CYaBro (73)
643976 2008-02-27 03:45:00 LiteOn is one of the better brands out there. Have you tried a different program to play the DVD? Try VLC Media Player.

Your PC isn't over heating is it? Check temps in the BIOS, or get a program like Hardware sensors monitor.

If you have access to a lens cleaning CD run that through it.

Check in the device manager to see if the DMA settings are correct - look for IDE/ATA Controllers, expand it and double click on the controller that your optical drive is on. (probably secondary). Look under the advances settings tab, the transfer mode should be Ultra DMA Mode 2 4 or 5. If it is PIO , thats the problem.

Liteon is good.

ARe you using PowerDVD or something similar?

Whats the specs of the PC? Enough hardware to run it smoothly? Nothing else hogging the resources?

And what movies? Commercial or downloaded? Downloaded ones are often terrible rips and terrible quality.

643978 2008-02-27 04:05:00 DVD drive running in UDMA mode?
You can check this in Device Manager.

643979 2008-02-27 04:57:00 Sounds like the drive is having trouble reading the second layer. PaulD (232)
643980 2008-02-27 05:06:00 I'm fairly sure they make units for other manufacturers also (rebranded), so they must be of reasonable quality.
Tried using a laser cleaning DVD? Might just be dusty ;)

643981 2008-02-27 06:38:00 the dvd's i'm currently using are rented from blockbuster so i guess they're genuine. i haven't gotten round to playing them yet.

when i tried to copy one of the dvd's to my hdd using dvd fab it all went smooth till about 55% and then it become tediously slow with the optical drive struggling big time in reading it.

same happened when i used dvd decrypter, fine till bout halfway through then tediously slow.

when i watched syriana on dvd, genuine copy, using powerdvd it did the same, the movie stop and started. i seriously think this drive is screwed, which sucks cause u guys too r saying it's a good brand. i will try and find those firmware updates, if that doesn't solve it, i just don't know, might consider buying a new drive.

oh and btw when i put in iron eagle which i rented from blockbuster, it didn't read it AT ALL, no scratches on the dvd, but the damn drive just wouldn't read the dvd. same happened when i rented out raw deal bout 2 months ago, and it played fine on our standard sony dvd player in the living room.

about the specs, i checked an it's set on DMA if available and not PIO.
i have 2 gig of ram, nvidia 6100 and an amd 5200+ X2 dual core so plenty to watch a simple dvd.

643982 2008-02-27 06:49:00 Clean the disc, Rentals are always in crappy condition, And she sounds like shes choking when it switches to the second layer.

My advice, Rip it with DVD shrink and watch the copy.....
