644857 2008-02-29 06:58:00 Hi there

I must be the only person running XP without service pack 2 installed. So I have tried to install a copy of XP-SP2 that I got from a friend. It unpacks ok and about half way through the installation process the installation crashes. I have tried it 4 times and it happens each time.

I have an H-P PC with 2.8Gz Pentium 4 and 512 MB memory. It also has Norton Anti-virus 2006 installed (which I am going to upgrade once I get SP2 installed). I close all open programs including ones that operate in the background like Norton) but the installation still crashes.

Does anybody know what I can do?

Thanks

Cheers :help:

644858 2008-02-29 07:05:00 First of all uninstall Norton - do yourself a favor and DON'T try putting it back in.
Its more trouble than what its worth. Youi wouldn't be upgrading you would be downgrading - Ask just about anyone here. ( note I said just about ;) )

You may need to Download XP SP2 (www.microsoft.com) the original one you have there may be damaged in some way.

Download Ccleaner from my sig, run that to clear out the Temp files as well.

IF you have any spyware / viruses on the PC that can also stop SP2 from installing, you need to have a clean system to start with.

To see if we can figure out whats causing the crash click start/run type in eventvwr In the system & application logs see if theres anything in the way of errors at the time of the crash - double click to expand the error message and copy/paste back the complete error message.

ALSO download Hijackthis (www.trendsecure.com) save it to your desktop in a folder, run it and select save a log. Copy Paste the complete log back here and someone will look and see if theres any obvious bugs in the system.

Get rid of Nortons, and some of the others (Adaware/AVG). You only need one. Get Avast Home (free), or NOD32 (You pay for it).

If u want a firewall, try Comodo in my sig.

Uninstall all versions of Java. Link is in my sig under here

Get trojan remover in my sig, install and update it, click on scan.

Then select all options under utilities.

Get rid of realplayer too. It installs too much crap.
