333612 2005-03-13 06:51:00 I am strongly of the opinion that asking for help from PressF1 for your answer guy problems is just plain wrong. E|im (87)

amatiatia Ko ètahi o nga waka o mua i kitea e te Pàkehà, he amatiatia.
outrigger canoe Some of the early canoes seen by Pàkehà were outriggers.
amatiatia He amatiatia i ia taha o te waka.
outrigger The canoe had an outrigger on each side.

This is amatiatia

333616 2005-03-13 07:19:00 I'm sure it's got something to do with the seabed and the foreshore, failing that it may be tied into some kind of payment system for doing nothing, hmm like a benefit. :D

333617 2005-03-13 07:22:00 According to Williams "Dictionary of the Maori Language" "amatiatia" means either the outrigger of a canoe, or a canoe with an outrigger.

"Matiatia" (according to the same dictionary) with a macron over the first "a", indicating a long vowel, means either a seaside plant, or Fescue littoralis (a coarse grass). Presumably littoralis indicates "seaside" as well, so maybe the meanings are the same.

Ignore "Ex-Westy" - there are prats everywhere like that. Nothing constructive to add; only their prejudices.
