| 333339 | 2005-03-12 04:57:00 | This article (www.nzherald.co.nz) from the New Zealand Herald reports that the OECD has calculated that 24.2% of educated New Zealanders now live overseas. It is probably higher, because Germany, Italy and South Korea did not offer figures for New Zealand-born residents and workers living within their borders. Most end up in Australia, which offers permanent residence, a comparative culture and is only a ~$250 airfare away. But Australia is suffering from the same problem, although not as severe as New Zealand. Significantly, immigration of skilled workers into New Zealand does not completely offset this, as the emigrating New Zealanders are even more educated that the incoming immigrants. Whatever your political persuasion, this undoubtedly looks like a brain-drain. I did used to think that it was just young New Zealanders taking OEs of varying lengths, and that it was good for educated New Zealanders to spend a few years overseas to earn international experience, capital and connections, which would benefit New Zealand when they do eventually return. But 24.2% does sound like they are not returning. And from faint memory, this figure seems to have grown. |
