335074 2005-03-18 00:04:00 Re computers at kindy, probably not unless for educational purposes as stated in previous thread.

We have a computer at home for the kids (3yrs, 4yrs & 5yrs) and 95% of the time theyd rather be outside playing.
Cheers, lazydog.

335075 2005-03-18 00:16:00 Social interaction, free-play and creative expression are the most important skills to learn at "kindy". Computers are rarely good at these tasks.

So, computers should be at home and supervised like TV.

335076 2005-03-18 00:19:00 We adults look at computers with an adult mind.

A preschooler looks at it with a preschoolers mind.

For them (I can only vouch for my own kids) they see it as entertainment, when it fails to entertain, then they dont use it. For a short while both my kids would fight over using the home computer but that lasted for a few months then until they could find something else to fight over.

The amount of time my girls used the computer at their kindy would be lucky to be 20 min a week. The purpose was to develop fine motor skills and computers are just another tool for teachers to use to assess this. My girls kindy encouraged outdoor activity as much as possible (and wouldn't you if you had 30 noisy 4 year olds inside). I think that having them available at all levels of education is a must purely for the experience of making them familiar, remember not all families have computers (especially in decile 1 area's)

335078 2005-03-18 01:14:00 Hi Beetle . Limited responses?????
Probably my last word - when/if you do get to the hands-on stage with this project, look out for a locally produced CD which I have bought for each of my families . Called BEARS, check it out at www . bears . co . nz . I saw it recently at half price again in Warehouse . Extract from the site . . .

"3-5years At this age children will be wanting to use the mouse, and if new to computers will pick up the necessary skills quite quickly . Playing tag with Oscar, in the story and trying to pop the balloons and bubbles, are good games to develop mouse skills . They will be wanting to explore and discover things on their own . You will still need to be there so they can show you what they have discovered .

Bears provides lots of opportunities to create interesting discussions . "Why won’t the bear let me do anything if I’ve left the element on the stove on?" "Why do I have to close the fridge door?" The "Did you know?" section of the web site may help you answer some of the questions you will be asked, and there are links to help you go searching with your child for more information and photos, e . g . of autogiro’s and aircraft . Try counting the bears that jump up from behind the bed after they've popped the balloons . Discuss the differences outside in the different seasons .

4-6years At this age children may become interested in words, and enjoy playing the word matching and playing their own tunes in the music game . They’ll also get a lot out of the lesson plans and resources from the web site . "

Contains poetry, games, hide and seek, stories and some great music .

and yeah posts have come to a halt . interesting veiw tho . . . .

335080 2005-03-18 13:52:00 In the future computers will be ubiquitous in the environment and any children who are not at home and au fait with their use will be left behind, as is happening to many people these days who are technophobes.

Computers and Preschoolers

Children 3 and 4 years of age are developmentally ready to explore computers, and most early childhood educators see the computer center as a valuable activity center for learning. Timing is crucial. Children need plenty of time to experiment and explore. Young children are comfortable clicking various options to see what is going to happen next. Teachers may want to intervene when children appear frustrated or when nothing seems to be happening. Frequently, just a quick word or two, even from across the room, reminds children what they need to do next to reach their desired goal. Providing children with minimal help teaches them they can operate the computer successfully. In addition, by observing what children are doing, the teacher can ask probing questions or propose problems to enhance and expand children's computer experiences.

335082 2005-03-18 15:57:00 I agree with Foxy - computers got no place in a kindy regardless of intention. We definitely do not want to "create" a world full of geeks, would we - we want more AB's and you get that by running around playing outside.

lol

335083 2005-03-18 19:01:00 I thought Mitchell lost his job because he had more AB's than he knew what to do with :-). Perhaps kids will grow up regarding computers as nothing special, just a tool and not be in awe of them like many adults. PaulD (232)
