Really?

Matrix 1 was okay because it broke special effects barriers and partially interesting storyline. Was there any real reason for the following two?

You can't go past classics like 'Tron' and even 'Total Recall', also can't forget the first three Star Wars (4,5,6).

Though I haven't watched either for 15 odd years, so they may be crap

If i remember rightly i had The Running Man game on my Amiga 500, it stank.

Did you know that science fiction started to go downhill around the time that its popular name changed from SF to Sci-Fi ??

334458 2005-03-16 12:36:00 Apart from Terry's post, you guys are all talking about pretty recent stuff by my standards .
(After all, the thread says BEST Sci-Fi)
So what about the starters?

Think 2001:A Space Odyssey?
Widescreen magic & a sensation at the end of the late 60s . Slow-moving, but great music .

In b/white, the even older Return of the Body Snatchers still intrigues new viewers ( or maybe that's categorised under "horror" nowadays) for its small-town realism mixed with the previously-unimaginable . .

And that thing with Charlton Heston & the monkeys will be remembered as a huge novel breakthrough of its time, whereas much recent sci-fi just follows patterns already set . .

(OK I confess I haven't seen most of those . So I'm open to argument if I'm wrong)

334459 2005-03-16 18:22:00 Agree with Laura. How could 2001: A Space Odyssey not be on the list.
It achieved enormous fame for its then revolutionary special effects in 1968 and is still considered one of the best Sci-Fi films ever made.

334461 2005-03-16 21:07:00 Star Wars Ep 4 A New hope, Ep 6 return of the jedi.

Ep1 sucked , Ep2 Sucked (They didnt look like Victory Class Star Destroyers)
Ep5 was a little slow... but I like the fact that the empire sorta gained more than the rebels

I didnt mind Star Trek 6: The undiscovered country, and Star Trek Nemesis

I liked #6 better, Nemesis emphasised too much on Computer Generated graphics
