2005-03-17 10:05:00 | I assume that a lot of day-care centres must have had computers for quite a while, judging by the type of posts one sees from time to time on these and other forums. They could only have come from day-care level inmates I would have thought? (Not this thread beetle, it is a very valid point)

2005-03-17 10:55:00 | I would be far ahead of where I am now if I had been given access to a computer when I was very young, but they didn't exist then. I remember sitting around for years wondering what to do with myself until I was given a good book to read when I reached about 7. I was never interested in sports etc and never was given anything that challenged me until much later. I say, there is nothing better than a good video game to develop fine motor skills and all the other things the kids are going to need in the future. | zqwerty (97) | |
2005-03-17 10:57:00 | I would say it is a great idea to have computers in kindy if only used as an education aid. ie. the supervisors showing a small group of kids a short video or pitcures on a subject they are tring to teach. Encarta type of programs. Not kids allowd to use computer.

2005-03-17 11:54:00 | I agree with the ideas expressed by Curious George & FoxyMX. Under 5s have far more important developmental things for their brains & bodies to grow successfully than spend that time on computers - no matter what they might learn from the screen. Schooldays are quite soon enough to start electronic education. If they don't learn about BOOKS first, perhaps they never will..? And when doctors currently predict stacks of future medical problems for today's overweight kids who combine fatty food with countless hours of TV watching, why would you want to slow down the natural energetic exuberance of an under 5 by giving them one more screen to stay motionless in front of? My generation played games & climbed trees. (Unfortunately we also damaged healthy bodies when we learned later to smoke - but that's another story) These kids have loads of time ahead of them to be stuck in front of keyboards, so why rush it?

2005-03-17 12:19:00 | "natural energetic exuberance of an under 5" Definitely does not describe me at that age. I know I would have loved a computer. My potential was wasted by the stereotypical attitudes that people had towards children in the Fifties, and even now.

2005-03-17 20:20:00 | The bottom line is that today parents expect any school, including preschools, to have computers for kids. Good or not good? Well, it depends on the usage: if done in moderation, i.e. so that children are not glued to the screen for a long time (guess more than 20 or 30 minutes in one day, but not everyday), then fine... but for them to get square-eyed when they should be learning the basics, including practical life skills, social skills, and physical exercise, then it is simply wrong. And of course the content on screen should be educational (to enhance the basics), suited for under 5's. Same goes for telly. Many studies here in NZ and overseas show that children spend waaaaay too long in front of the tube, even more hours than in the classroom! And Beetle, I am with you: Metla must not have had his morning coffee, or has gone without a hug for too long. :D Appears that he just wanted to gripe, even if it made no sense. Hey, usually he gripes and it does make sense! BTW, remember the research last year that showed fast moving images on screen impairs brain development in children?!!

It was in relation to the comment that some who post here are of a preschool level, Seeing as Im not allowed to mock people and we supposedly have a "zero tolerance " policy then a wide-ranging backhander should receive the same scrutiny . Never mind, Ill jump into another thread and refer to other posters as preschoolers and then see what sort of ban I get . |

2005-03-17 20:41:00 | Hi folks. re: And Beetle, I am with you: Metla must not have had his morning coffee, or has gone without a hug for too long. Appears that he just wanted to gripe, even if it made no sense. I thought that Metla's "gripe" was well done, considering GF's tongue in cheek post immediately prior.
