333161 2005-03-11 10:34:00 there is such a thing called community involvement, they have no money to splash out on a website designer, do it for free, then you may get referrals, and so on and so on, thats how i have done it

I thought I might sound bad. Think about it my perspective... I'M A SELFISH, MONEY HUNGRY TEENAGER!!! But think about it, the girls get paid for babysitting; boys get paid for mowing neighbours lawns. I'd consider designing/ making/ maintaining the same thing :D :D .

333162 2005-03-11 10:48:00 theres a difference, for a start, anyone with an iq higher than 60 can babysit someone, it takes great skill to design a functional website that looks good, with minimal coding, TIM is worth jack sh*t when it comes to designing websites, print design is not university level, maybe open polytechnic, but definately not uni, uni involves vector drawing, bryce 5, 3d rendering, etc. Your average teenager can use photoshop, and pagemaker is very similar to publisher in its wysiwyg layout. Proper website design involves, perl, php, some html, css, java, flash etc. dont get ahead of yourself. do it for free and do a good job of it, maybe uou might get referals Tux (606)
333163 2005-03-11 12:15:00 I’m thinking $50 for designing/ making the website over 2-3 week period and maybe $2 a week for updating content (few minutes of copying and pasting news/ announcements).

That's a bit low - I'd suggest ignore most other comments, and ask for $195.00 setup and $10.00 per month to maintain it.

333164 2005-03-11 12:22:00 Or you could work it out by how many hours you put into it and charge a reasonable rate. If it looks pretty good and you've been working hard on it $20hr *might* be ok. Though that might add up. You could charge minimum wage, or $10hr. Most starting web designers earn like $25-$40hr+ but you would expect something pretty awesome for that. E|im (87)
333165 2005-03-11 13:11:00 And because I've just downloaded a new currency converter, I can report that John Eire's 300 pounds are worth NZ$780 tonight.
(How come my keyboard has no pounds sign when metla's has...Grrr...).

333166 2005-03-11 13:38:00 I would say $50 per hour while you are designing and building the website, but put a cap of about $1000.

On going updates charge $60 per hour, or $10 per 10 minutes.

Dont sell yourself cheap, if they had to pay a company you could easily double those charges.

£300 is a reasonable enough price for non-profitable organisations - if the site looks well and the client is happy... and I can report £300 is 60,094.44 (Japan) Yen - but still reasonable! A profitable organisation (with same functionality) could cost double that for the first yearly fee.

333168 2005-03-11 20:09:00 Whatever you do, don't do what I did...

I made a website selling paua jewellery, I figured for 4 pages about $500 would be ok. Even that was grudgingly given, and they argued about not doing it among themselves whilst I was there because of the cost.

I had to scan and then edit about 50 pictures it took AGES. I figured I worked for about $2ph, at the best.

The website when up made $400 in the first month... boy those guys got a good deal...

If you make it for free, put google adverts on it and take the income from that, I get a check most months from google doing that to my own site.

You could also use it as an example for your CV and have a link there to contact you for other work.

You would be surprised at how much some "community" organisations have at their disposal. If they are agreeable I would suggest double that for creating the website and what you have suggested for maintaining it - $2 per week. That way you are getting a little pocket money and, if you do a good job, they are getting a bargain. With luck you will get referals from it as well.

Considering as how it's a community (and presumably non profit) outfit your propsed charges seem fair enough to me. I did a similar thing recently for a club I am a member of when a "professional" was going to charge them $2500. I quoted them $500. It took just a few hours of my spare time of an evening, as this one should of yours. My outlay was $zero. I had a think about it when it was all finished and up and running and decided "to hell with it" and gave it to em free. What goes around comes around :)

Anyway .... your pricing sounds fair all considered. Go for it :)
Remember the "KISS" principle tho wont you.
