644783 2008-02-29 02:33:00 Hi all,

Does any one know if I can use a AGP 4x card in a AGP 1x slot... I know the 1x runs at 3.3V(???) and the 4x runs on 1.5V signalling? Would the 4x still work though as it would only draw the voltage it required?

Cheers,

644784 2008-02-29 02:37:00 I've done it, but I don't recommend it with a powerful card. Something real budget is OK, but don't go sticking anything bigger than an FX series in there, or things will melt. wratterus (105)
644785 2008-02-29 02:56:00 depends...some cards are not backwould compatible to apg 1. mainly the voltage issue i think.

also some motherboards sticking 4x card in 1x slot kills the motherboard. i can't remeber which way around, it may be 1x cards in 4x times slot. it was to do with some intel chips.

also anything big and fast is going to be wasted on a p2 era system. todays cheapy will proberly match the fastest they had then.

644786 2008-02-29 03:23:00 Thanks for the info.... yeah this is a PIII system running as a "server" for our elecricity monitoring system.

The box is running NT4 Server. We will be migrating this to a DL380 G5 server but before I can do this I need to get some archive files from the server box, which can only be hosted on the server for some reason..

Cheers.

644787 2008-02-29 04:14:00 Its when its 1.5v, and you chuck a 3.3v card in it. It'll fry it.

The port on this is 1.5v and it warns you in the manual, not to put a 3.3v in/on it.

It says it will cause permanent damage.

Some ASUS mobo manuals also state this. And some ASUS mobos also have an LED beside the port. If it goes on, it'll telling you something.

Dont use that card.

this may help (pinouts.ru)

As it says the slots are keyed, so only ones that work will fit.

Altho it looks like that site maybe out of date, as 1.5v also supports x8, which it doesnt list.

644788 2008-02-29 04:34:00 the connectors are keyed, so if it doesn't fit, it wouldn't work anyway.

If the card or the slot is universal, it will fit and should work fine.

make sure though that if the card/board is universal, there isn't a voltage selector switch or setting somewhere instead of an autodetect function...

644789 2008-02-29 06:37:00 catch is some boards came out with unkeyed agp slots. i think intel was the culprit, i cannot remember which series they are.

however a p3 system should have agp2 unless its slot 1 not socket 370.

644790 2008-02-29 17:32:00 If you require the use of an old legacy card, why not get hold of a PCI graphics card?

I MIGHT have one that you can have [might being the keyword in this sentence - have to look though my spare cards]

644792 2008-02-29 23:15:00 PCI? Legacy? What!

How about a VLB Card with 256K of ram....
