I have not yet learnt how to ride, but my little brother learn in about a week of hard practising. | 333347 | 2005-03-12 09:13:00 | Hi jameskan. Like you, I was fascinated when I first saw a movie of a one wheeled bike being ridden. (At about age 10 in 1945) From that day on it was my desire to try it out. I finally got the chance 14 years later in 1959, when someone loaned me one for a day. By the end of the day I was able to ride it. I held on to a post and figured out how to get on the seat and put my feet on the pedals. With no one teaching you, you try pedalling and the bike just gets pedalled forwards from under you. I found the trick was to purposely lean forwards, then pedal the bike beneath yourself until upright, then lean forwards again and repeat the process. Although I felt that I was pedalling along whilst leaning forwards, a couple of photos showed that I was actually sitting almost straight upright. That no doubt, is the wrong way to learn, but in those days with no other instructions available it worked for me. I stumbled across the above web sites the other day and had a good read, so was was most surprised to see your posting on Press F1 about it. It was the only information I have ever seen about unicycles since my early experience with one. I wish it had been available then, I would have saved my pennies and purchased one. The web sites say that the main rule is to 'sit on the seat', 'sit on the seat', 'sit on the seat'. By that, I think they are emphasising that you don't stand on the pedals, you put the weight on the seat and just use the pedals to propel the bike forwards. If you are keen to try one, leave no stone unturned until you have found a contact, as there are plenty of clubs, schools etc which promote them and would be most willing to let you have a go at it. You would learn to ride one and you would enjoy it. :cool: Cheers and best of luck |
