337020 2005-03-23 05:41:00 What is the command for uncompressing a .tgz file in Linux just to the directory that contains it.

x for eXtract
v for verbose (say what it's doing)
z for uncompress (gzip, j for Bz2 compression?)
f for filename (this option must be last because it has an argument -- the name)

If it is set up with a directory name component in all the filenames, it will put them in that path. You can extract each file in turn, (do "tar tvzf" to find the names) and they will go to the current directory. There is almost certainly some way to overrride included file paths ... man tar ... but it's not something I've needed. ;)
