336255 2005-03-20 22:24:00 A lady down in Carterton had a transformer blow up in her area last week. He neighbours phones are now working but hers isn't!!! BUT her dial up modem works and she can send and receive e-mail????
How can this be? Is it possable?
I think if her modem is working her line must be OK. Is the fault in the phone not the line?
Telecom don't seem very interested.

336257 2005-03-20 22:39:00 I passed on Tweake's message, but I don't think it will be very well received.
Here's her e-mail.

Please ring FAULTs AND SAY [edit - personal details removed] has had no telephone since last Wed. Morning, if it goes one more day, watch this space with Paul Holmes...

A transformer blew last Weds morning.. everyone has phones on except her ladyship..she is getting madder by the second..... computer came on Friday night (thank god!!) but same line as Telephone. so whats up.... they need to come and check inside the house, so must stay here and wait another week. come off it.... I have a life to lead as well!

Other residents phones came on last Friday night after Weds. guess I can expect a nice CREDIT???

I live in the rural area... had to drive into Carterton to get an appointment with the Dr urgently and return in the afternoon for it... as no b. phones!!! To bad if I have a heart attack at night.. I will die unattended... as cant get a phone on.... give them a hard luck story please.... please.... thanks...

336258 2005-03-20 22:44:00 if a dail up modom is working then the phone line is ok. if anything its usually the net that dies first if theres a fault on the line.
tell her to borrow a neighbours phone and try it.

BTW is the phone cordless by any chance? ie power failure killed the power supply to the phone.

336259 2005-03-20 22:55:00 Do u think its a good idea posting someone's name, phone/address in the forum??

I think not.

336260 2005-03-21 00:26:00 A dialup modem is nothing more than a glorified phone. If it works, there's no reason normal phone services shouldn't.

In fact if anything was going to get killed by a surge I would have picked the modem over the phone any day.

As already said, tell her to go borrow/buy another phone (you can buy one for less than $10) and plug it in. It'll answer the question pretty quickly.

I doubt it's a Telecom fault.

Telecom don't seem very interested.
No surprises there, it's not their problem. I imagine the thought of Paul Holmes is just terrifying them though.

336261 2005-03-21 01:15:00 Cordless phones (the base units) are often VERY susceptible to the EPR issues generated by power faults though.

EPR = Earth Potential Rise where a localised power fault can cause a significant voltage momentarily on adjacent phone cabling.

336262 2005-03-21 01:44:00 Hi JJJJ. From the general tone of your friend's message, you can't really expect any genuine tech to get involved in this thread - can you? I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Scouse (83)
336263 2005-03-21 03:45:00 Best not to get Telecom out yet. If its not their end then they will charge her $99.

Exactly what has been said already, try another phone as this ones probably died.

If there is still some prob (I'd be surprised) then hassle Telecom.

336264 2005-03-21 04:17:00 The problem is she does not have a cordless phone. She does not even have a plug in one. She has one of the old hard wired type.
So it looks like it is Telecom's job.
And telecom visited other houses in the street and checked the phones but did not call on her.
She must be kicking up a fuss though. A local reporter called on her to get the story.
And Speedy G you are quite I sent it before I realised.
