Ok on here i am considered very much a noob, well i think so .

but on another site, or even talking to a friend on how to fix simple comp probs, they get this glazed look in their eye . . . . and yep ive lost em .

now when i go to see M sometimes i feel like im the glazed look person . . . he just lose's me with the blah blah blah stuff about bits and peices .

so is it like a status level thing, you know like grades in school?

total geek cant talk to a normal person with out babbling letters, numbers or dots?

next level big words? no longer in the dictionary maybe?

and lower grouse level of the workers, who get the snippets of information but have no power or memory to pass it on?

and then like me?
who know enuf to get into trouble . . . often .

and then total noobs, who can barely turn on a computer or shudder at the thought of touching one?

where do you think your level is?
is there any levels?

or is it you dont know till you get there?
where is there in geek land?

will i be stuck noob forever? im not super noob, but never be super geeky either id say . . :p

ok let the stupidity begin . . . . . . . . . . . . :D

Some "geeks" talk like that . If you want to educate someone as well as help its best to use plain english .
Levels - well I think we're all still learning . PCs aren't static, you can't just say one day, well, now I know everything because even if you did learn everything, then it all chnages again .

There's always something more to learn . Its also more specialised now too . Programming, and then which languages, networking, and its different parts - structured cabling, hubs and switches, Cisco, Novell, Unix, PC side of it etc

No-one stays "new", you just increase your current knowledge as you go on . Of course you will eventually end up with a fair bit of completely irrelevant knowledge too .
I don't see too many DOS questions here anymore :-)

And my partner knows a whole lot about electro-mechanical telecoms equipment . Fat lot of use it is now . . . .

So we contribute our bits of knowledge to some, and learn more off others . As always . .

335641 2005-03-19 02:34:00 If there is one word worse than geek, it is guru. Christ almighty that word makes me cringe. The actual definition is supposed to be a spiritual teacher or something.

Anyway, my eyes glaze over when talking to someone about tax accounting, the directions to somewhere I have never been before, building a retaining wall, driving along a beach in 4wd mode - all these I have experienced in the last few days myself. It is not just IT, it is everything I have not done or spent a lot of time doing. Which would apply to IT as well.

335642 2005-03-19 02:52:00 Don't be too harsh on yourself Beetle, you have (dare i say it) better computer skills then most of the people I deal with, and some of them try and tell me "how it really is" .

Anyhow, You have managed to fix 90 percent of the issues (mainly configuration on your comp, set up Windows to your liking, and this means sourcing, downloading and configuring the programs that apeal to you . (many people would never download and install anything apart from a virus) .

Plus, When you are faced with a problem you take steps to remedy it, You do this because you know how you want it and are prepared to take the plunge .

Face it, Your a computer geek . . . . :D

Additionally you managed to buy from the best Computer Shop in the region,Pure genius, sent your leetness rating skyrocketing .

Muhahahahahaha .

335643 2005-03-19 02:56:00 Hi Beetle. You're definitely on the threshold of geekness. I can recall you offering/giving advice on more than one occasion. Scouse (83)

335646 2005-03-19 10:53:00 Ok, I have noticed in the last month or so (that I have been studying CompTIA) that I come home and talk to my partner about the day etc (like ya do).
Over the last few weeks though, she has admitted to having that glazed look and been thinking 'I have no idea what he is on about'.
Which kinda scares me, coz there was a time not too long ago when my eyes used to glaze over at her when she was talking computers.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm just a no0b compared to most of you lot, and probably will remain that way for quite some time yet

335647 2005-03-19 19:53:00 What am I? I can't be a newbie after 12 years with a computer.
The problem is they keep changing the technology. If we still had 386's and DOS I would be an expert.
Guess there should be a name for those of us trailing along about twelve months behind the experts.
"Power User" I laugh every time I see those words.
