335268 2005-03-18 07:25:00 Going to see the new Hitch Hikers movie?I saw a trailer the other day, and I got a bit of a sinking feeling - a lot of American accents, and Marvin the paranoid android was a bit too cartoony and shiny compared with how I'd always envisaged him.

I always thought the radio series was the best rendition.

335269 2005-03-18 07:29:00 1979? I'm showing my wrinkles here, but I remember it back in the '50s in very grainy black and white, and it was some of the scariest stuff I'd ever seen.

Yes, there were I think 3 Quatermass movies made in the 50s and maybe 60s. But the character was re-surrected for a mini-series in 79 and it was actually pretty good. Wonderfully creepy.

The Ford Prefect character is played by Mos Def (American hip hop artist) which isn't promising, but on the other hand there are plenty of Brit actors too, and Alan Rickman is the voice of Marvin (I agree about the design of Marvin though).

And although he's a Yank, I'm quite looking forward to Sam Rockwell as Zaphod. He was a blast in Galaxy Quest and certainly has the acting chops ...

Wonderfully creepy. They were actually TV serials, and one of the great injustices of my young life was that I wasn't allowed to see the last episode of one of them because of some misdemeanour (that I can't even remember these days!). I'd left UK by 1979.

The only title I tremember was "Quatermass and the Pit" which revolved around some excavcation for a new underground line and the thing that was found...

335274 2005-03-18 11:34:00 I'm not sure where my stepdad got them, but he picked up a whole heap of Space 1999 DVDs recently. Warehouse or Noel Leemings or something. Jeremy (1197)

Space 1999 series 1 and two are available in two boxed DVD sets, I can supply more information if you are interested.

The series where most of the world has died from a nasty virus is I suspect "survivors" which was produced by the BBC in the mid 70s, this is not available on tape / DVD at the moment but I am told that it might be relesed as part of a classic SIFI collection at some stage.

Tomorows people is not available.
Saphire & Steel is available on DVD to the best of my knowledge.
I hope this helps.

335276 2005-04-06 09:27:00 Might I just add that "Survivors" was one of the best series that I can remember from the late 70s. Indeed I'm suprised that it hasn't been repeated by Prime. It would stand the test of time.

How about "The Prisoner"? Patrick McGoughan as No 6. Still a cult classic.

335277 2005-04-06 11:54:00 I have all episodes of The Prisoner on VHS, taped off TV when it played late at night long ago (early 90s?). I tried to pause during the ads to edit them out, but forgot to unpause once or twice, so alas my collection is not 100%. I've serioursly considered buying the box set DVD several times.

I am not a number. I am a free man!
