335809 2005-03-19 22:39:00 DVD + VCR + Hard Drive.
The way to go,apart from reduced price in 12 months or so,will have sorted out other problems.

335810 2005-03-19 22:52:00 I agree that DVD + HDD is the way to go when the price is appropriate, but not with VCR as well. Time to move on and not continue to embrace the old technology.

Do you also still have that Stanley Steamer engine installed alongside the V8 in the Aston Martin Cicero?

335811 2005-03-19 22:56:00 Our VCR has packed up and we are in the same situation as JJJJJ - buy a vcr/dvd combo now to record TV or wait until the HD versions turn up ? Technology change is getting faster, and waiting for the newer model or the lower prices is frustrating..

The only time to buy anything is "later on" ...
NExt Tue, we will have to watch John on TV3 at 7 PM realising we can't tape Paul .....
Ah well ...

335812 2005-03-19 23:00:00 The $347 have no hard drive (logically, at that price).
Thought so (at that price).

How about the other question? Do people (who have the hard drive) just record straight to the disk, or do they take the time to clean out the ads etc and create menus?

Is the extra feature of a hard drive generally not used due to the time involved?

Although I suppose it does give the option of playing a disk whilst recording to the hard drive.

Some of us would gladly pay not to have to watch Paul, so that would rate here as an advantage.

If you just want the convenience of time shifting, then a DVD recorder without HDD would suffice easily.

I would bet that 90% of those with a HDD version never really need the functionality that it gives.

335814 2005-03-19 23:38:00 I had to make the same decision recently when my old VCR died . I really wanted a DVD recorder with hard drive, but the prices are still too high . I ended up getting a combo VCR / DVD-ROM machine as an interim measure as they are quite reasonable in price .

My computer is set up with a TV-Tuner card so I could record with that if I stuffed a much larger hard drive in it . The only problem is my TV reception on it . I really need to be hooked up to the main aerial for clear reception but as the aerial coax is on the far side of the house, this would mean major re-routing and hole drilling . Decided I could live without that for the timebeing .

I was (stil am) contemplating setting up a multimedia computer to use similar to the Windows XP Media Centre, except I would run Linux on it and use MythTV ( . mythtv . org/modules . php?name=MythFeatures" target="_blank">www . mythtv . org) .

Definitely a case of typing b4 thinking,I agree the VCR is obsolete.

Don't they repeat Paul H later in the evening in an attempt to get someone to watch him?

I would pay double to avoid Paul, and to be spared the recurring vision of John's prehensile upper lip as well .

I'd rather watch Susan, regardless of content, because she doesn't get on my tits with idiosyncratic mannerisms .

Cheers

And now that I've mentioned the lip, you won't be able to drag your eyes away from it . The thing has a life of its own! :D

Old John always brings to mind the idea of a Jack Russel who always wanted to be a Bulldog .
