335649 2005-03-20 01:04:00 I've started to pretend I don't know anything. Its way easier that way, after years of going round to people's homes at midnight to fix their fricking computer because an assignment is due the next day, I'm tired of it.

Theres heaps to learn, although I'm pretty bored with computer hardware. Theres not too much to learn, just plug it all in. However I've become quite interested in making computational devices out of logic gates. Boolean algebra kicks ass. So too does making games/demos for gameboy advance. A great little platform.

I doubt you could make someone a 'level', although that would be the ultimate geek thing to do considering D&D history. However think of it like car people, some people know heaps about one type of car (eg. Toyota) but little about another. Its a similar principal and pretty damn difficult to rank anyone.

335650 2005-03-20 06:34:00 Hi Beetle. On your scale of noob to geek... Twice today I have had it brought home to me that I am a systems user who tinkers with the machine (a woodworker really) and, despite many years at it, often barely understands the tinkering. First time today, thepom posted with a problem in Word. The end-user in me tried to see a result in the various functions available in Word menus. Godfather stepped in and immediately saw the problem as pertaining to graphics drivers, etc. Then thewhizz posted with a Formatting Problem which I immediately thought of as Word or Publisher related. I clicked on his post and, of course, he/she was sorting out the formatting of a disk. So, noob I may not be, but geek I will never be. Scouse (83)
335651 2005-03-20 07:02:00 Yeah i see what ya getting at .

But the ones i think would be able to tell us the most (apart from M? maybe) will most likely not post in this thread at all, or at any time at all in a beetle post unless its a joke . . . . .

at the moment am reorganiseing my study area, and have 3 books shelves full of books, discs, and music . . . . and only 2 books on comps . . . . one is linux tho????? . . . . . . . the rest on children, theory and education type stuff . . . . . .
so i beleive i actually no more about comps, than i do about my study at times . . . . and at other times i feel like investing in that way big new hammer . . . .

I have always wanted to be good at everything i do . . . . i now admit its better to be good at one thing and its ok to mediocre? at everything else .

but when it comes down to the most important things in my life like, my children and Hubby . . . . well im the best there is . . . . :D i will always be their mum, the best mum they have . . . and hubby well he no's better than to say anything, and we drive each other nuts, but then i spose i drive anyone nuts . . . . . . . . . :@@: but hey we still together so thats a miracle in this day and age i spose . . . . :p

Thanxs all . . . .
post away people . . . .

and wait for the next beetle dribble post when the urge hits again . . . .
:)

Everyone helps everyone else around here if they are able to for that particular problem.

Back on topic!

Geekness - this is purely relative to who you are talking to and I don't think you can place anyone on a geek level. As mentioned before, people can be a "geek" in one area and a "newbie" in others. With computering, you are always learning, and the more you learn the more you realise how much you still don't know. This is what makes it all fun though. :nerd:

335654 2005-03-20 08:28:00 I wasnt meaning to be rude or mean, but the people i find the most knowledgeable, dont post in my sorta ramble posts . . . . .

Unless its for to catch out beetle . . . . not many people are into philosophising or just rambling about things in my posts who i feel are true geeks . . . .

i also wasnt saying this to be unpleasent or mean about pf1 . we do all help each other, no matter what the subject .

i do think tho that unless requested at times the people i mean, dont post .
i seem to get the same people posting in my posts, (nothing wrong with that) and not many new ones .

even some of the ones i used to hear from a lot, dont now cos we all so busy .

sad really, i miss my friends and the laughter is not as great or often about here so much . . mainly due to me being bogged down by work and study .

and as i dont keep up with some of the new names of people i may not see the same olds here,

and no offence intended pctek . . . . or anyone . . . .

just having a beetle moment and thinking i miss the contact .

have a good one .

335655 2005-03-20 08:32:00 They're probably all flat out answering hard questions. :-) pctek (84)
335656 2005-03-20 08:50:00 Anyway I wouldn't worry about "Status" or level or whatever.
If you're enjoying it and learning then just keep having fun.

For instance I started off playing about with PCs, decided it would be great to do it for a living, got some quals, then jumped about a bit. Structured cabling which lead to a chance to do the Cisco route but it didn't grab my attention. Went off and did support which lead to the chance to get more involved in the server side of things, that didn't thrill me much either.
So went and ran a small PC shop which was the most fun I had (until now).

Guess I was just meant to play about with PCs - not set the IT world afire with my greatness. Hahaha.
