This is all new to me so I wonder if any listers can recommend any particularly helpful (but not tooooo technical) instructional websites on the process. This may sound rather vague but I don't even know what questions to ask yet! Thanks all Jay |

You can have your blog hosted on Blogger's servers, or it can publish to your own specific FTP servers. And you can completely customise the templates to your own design (thought some knowledge of HTML and CSS is recommended). |

How many people are in your organisation and will they all need to contribute in some way? Will there need to be seperate groups with different roles. For example a few administrators, a bunch more posters (people who can add posts to the blog) and then everyone else can only comment with an individual login for each person? What functionality is expected? Do you want to involve organisation calendars, event listings, document sharing and collaboration? Where will it be hosted? Do you intend to host it within your intranet or on some public webserver so its accessible anywhere? Do you even want to mess around with setting up one or will a hosted solution like TypePad (www.typepad.com/) or Blogger (https:) do the job? To be honest, I'm basing most of these questions on features that Google Apps (www.google.com) offers for free out of the box. You should seriously look into it, it could even be worthwhile paying for as a service. They recently added Sites (www.google.com), a wiki-type service, to the already well integrated and stacked list of apps. But if your organisation is looking for a more customisable blog then it really does come down to what they expect out of it. There's literally hundreds of options besides the usual (wordpress.org/) suspects (http:) and the new (21degrees.com.au) interesting ( narrowing down the specifics would help. You sign up (www.blogger.com) and publish posts with content, and make use of the layout template to add additional page elements to the side bars. Many bloggers import or design 3 column templates. You can also enhance a blog with feedburner (www.feedburner.com)to allow subscriptions, and other optimization features, such as social bookmarks, banner widgets, feed count, etc. Many bloggers also use the more advanced web like wordpress com (wordpress.com/), which has plenty of plug ins for enhancement, but takes a bit more to familiarize with. Many bloggers promote their main sites with a blog,and perhaps wordpress could be more adaptable for business promotion... Visit or sign up with popular blog forums like bloggeries (www.bloggeries.com/), the full on digital point (http:), and the simpler mylot (www.mylot.com/)where you can learn quite a bit about blogging. Maybe subscribe to blogs of interest to learn more - such as problogger (http:), and dosh dosh (www.doshdosh.com/), which have authoritative blog content promotion techniques...i.e. how to promote blogs in forums, social sites, comments on blog, back links, etc... |
