337477 2005-03-24 06:23:00 According to this article (news.zdnet.co.uk), Microsoft patented IPv6, the new standard for the internet, way back in 2000. The Microsoft engineers' names that appear on the patent documents were part of the standards-setting committeem, the IETF.

Although the patent is almost certainly unenforceable, it's existence came to light only because Microsoft has been vexing some of its customers by telling them about it. So in the probable absence of any legal clout, Microsoft seems to be using it for scaremongering effect instead. Sad, very sad.

Here's another pertinent acronym to apply when discussing MS's modus operandi: FUM.

With Open Source Software becoming more widespread and gaining popularity, rebels will use OOS thus preventing MS owning the Internet

I bet that that was what they had in mind when the formed such groups at the IETF, and formed committees and such to set standards. But there you have it.

337481 2005-03-24 08:29:00 FUD! Bloody FUD! I'm going to cut it off, chop it up and make it into FUDamole!

In the end, who cares? As long as I can still access my fav sites, I'm happy. I really don't give a crap who does or dosen't "own" the internet. All the internet is is a group of Joe Average computers connecting to private servers that serve up streams of 000001110101010001011110010s. I don't care if MS control how they talk. Provided teh intarweb still functions, I'm not involved.
