2005-03-19 08:47:00 | I know nothing about DVD even though I have a DVD burner on my PC. I was looking at some DVD recorders at Woolworths this morning. $295. Sounds cheap to me. My VCR died a while ago and haven't got round to replacing it. Is a DVD recorder the same as a VCR except that uses disks instead of tape? How long do the disk record for? Can you set the start , stop times? Can a woman operate it? ie a wife. Roughly how much do the disks cost? All I want it for is to record the odd TV program. Is it as satisfactory as a VCR? Thanks

2005-03-19 09:21:00 | Is a DVD recorder the same as a VCR except that uses disks instead of tape? Yes How long do the disk record for? 1 hour/ 2 hours/ ... up to about 6 hours depending on the quality you want. 2 hours on a disk is probably still better quality than a tape. Can you set the start , stop times? Yes, just like a video Can a woman operate it? ie a wife. Leading question... Yours perhaps, mine perhaps not. Roughly how much do the disks cost? About $1.50 for "record once" types and $3 for RW types that you erase and re-record. All I want it for is to record the odd TV program. Is it as satisfactory as a VCR? Yes In my experience with the cheaper ones they are not quite as "user friendly" as the VCR, but perhaps if I read the book?

2005-03-19 09:55:00 | From the Woolworths site: "s & v dvd video combo 12 month warranty. 6 head hi fi vcr with an intergrated dvd player. $295.00" I take it that this is the one you were looking at. It will record and play videos but only play DVDs. My thoughts are that it will be a year or two till the technology in DVD recorders stabilizes and becomes cheap enough to buy - but I haven't looked at it for a few months. The Noel Lemming (http://www.noelleeming.co.nz/) site has recorders starting at $600.

2005-03-19 10:05:00 | DSE have DVD recorders for $347. They work. I have one, for recording security camera footage. 6 hours per DVD+RW But works fine on TV, and the Sky decoder. Takes a firewire (i-link) input direct from a video camera as well.

2005-03-19 11:03:00 | Prices have taken a sharp dive. A year ago they were around the $1,000 mark. I take it the cheap ones don't have a hard drive in them so what you record is what you get ie. no tinkering to remove unwanted ads, the leader and the trailer and the ability to add fancy menus? Does anyone actually do this anyway?

2005-03-19 22:00:00 | I'm sure I saw a Panasonic DVD VCR machine in Selectrix (100% Electric Store) on Friday for $299. The website says $379 - 399. Anyway, I was thinking of getting one, but ultimately the better choice would be DVD + VCR + Hard Drive. Noel Leeming have a Sharp model for $1000. But Sharp is no longer a brand I have confidence in. It strikes me that with the current strength of the $NZ, prices should have dropped more than they have. I suspect retailers are making hay while the sun shines. Fair enough but prices will drop further in the near future. Patience Jack.
